PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard reflects the skills, values and knowledge required by people in the sub-field of Forestry and/or wood technology who must be able to optimize machine productivity in Lumber Mill.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Optimize the productivity of all lumber processing machines in the Lumber Mill.
  • Correct identified saw and cutter problems.
  • Monitor productivity of all log and lumber processing machines in the Lumber Mill.
  • Improve saw and cutter machine productivity in the Lumber Mill.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Mathematical Literacy and Communication at NQF Level 3 or equivalentUnderstanding of the activities of the Lumber Milling process and specifically the details of all activities performed in the Saw Doctor Shop at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of work place procedures, health and safety measures, and environmental management principles equivalent to NQF Level 3.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of this Unit Standard covers:
  • The environment including equipment, tools and instruments which can be described as the Saw Doctor Shop of a Lumber Mill.
  • All personnel involved in all the activities of the Saw Doctor Shop.
  • All material handled and processed in the Saw Doctor Shop.
  • All the prescribed work place and safety, health and environmental management procedures relating to the Saw Doctor Shop.
  • All tools, instrument, equipment and materials used in the Saw Doctor Shop in Lumber Mill.
  • All procedures to optimize machine productivity in the lumber mill through improving cutting efficiencies.

    The context of this Unit Standard relates to training of a Learner to assist with optimizing the productivity of all lumber processing machines in the Lumber Mill.

    The level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 4, is appropriate because:
  • For foundational competence the Learner has to demonstrate possession of wide ranging technical skills, a broad knowledge base incorporating some basic theoretical concepts, and have the ability to assess, analyse and evaluate information independently.
  • For practical competence the Learner has to show the ability to operate in a variety of familiar and unfamiliar contexts under broad guidance and evaluation, and select from a considerable choice of procedures.
  • For reflexive competence the Learner has to demonstrate the ability to handle complete responsibility for quantity and quality of output, and possibly for that of others.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Carry out technical evaluations of all lumber processing machines in the Lumber Mill.

    Processing machines include but not limited to sawing, planing, chipping, profiling, logging, peeling, and debarking.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Technical evaluation procedures of all the lumber processing machines are described according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance of performing such procedures on lumber processing machines is explained according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Consequences of irregular evaluations of machines are given in terms of their effect on productivity. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify saw and cutter problems.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Possible technical problems related to the saw and cutter that may affect productivity are according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The effect of each problem on productivity is described according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Ways of resolving or minimizing technical problems are explained in terms of effect on productivity. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Monitor productivity of all (log and lumber) processing machines in the Lumber Mill.

    Possible cause for poor performance is determined according to worksite procedures.

    Improve saw and cutter machine productivity in the Lumber Mill.

    Maintenance schedules are planned with the aim of improving performance of machinery according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Saw and cutter machines are maintained as per standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Timber processing machines are monitored to control production according to worksite procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Timber includes but not limited to log, green lumber, dried lumber.
     


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 4 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency. Only an Assessor with suitable first hand experience in process operations will assess the learner's competency.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
