PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner will acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to assist in a team to erect and dismantle a basic scaffold system. A basic scaffold system includes access tower, mobile and fixed independent scaffold and bird cage scaffold. The qualifying learner will perform all tasks under supervision and instruction. This unit standard will serve, in conjunction with related unit standards, to develop the qualifying learner to function as a fixer in an access scaffold team.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Understanding the nature and scope of access scaffolding.
  • Erecting access scaffolding.
  • Dismantling access scaffolding.

    Understand the nature and scope of access scaffolding. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Personal Protective Equipment and other safety equipment for erecting and dismantling scaffolding is identified and used in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and SANS 10085. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range of other safety equipment includes, but is not limited to:
  • Safety harness, signage, barricading.

    Types of access scaffolding are identified and described in relation to their application according to SANS 10085.

    Range of access scaffolding includes, but is not limited to:
  • Putlog [20m], interlocking [30m], free-standing tower [mobile and static], walk through frame [45m] and tubular or system [60m].

    Hazards and risks at the work site are identified and reported according to organizational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Access scaffold base/setting out equipment and requirements are identified and described according to organizational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Handling of equipment during scaffold erection is demonstrated according to instructions and safe lifting and working practices. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range of equipment handling methods include, but are not limited to:
  • Hand over hand in-line, rope, ginneywheel and crane.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The erection sequence of access scaffolding is explained in accordance with safe working methods and organizational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Scaffold is erected within the prescribed timeframe and in accordance with SANS 10085. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Erected scaffold is modified according to instructions and organizational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Excess materials are sorted and removed from site in accordance with safe work procedures.

    Dismantle access scaffolding.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Hazards and risks related to dismantling access scaffolds are identified and reported according to organizational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Basic action plans are followed for the dismantling of access scaffolds. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Access scaffolding is dismantled in accordance with instructions and safe working methods. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Dismantled scaffold equipment is stacked and stored in demarcated lay-down area according to organizational housekeeping procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The removal of materials and equipment is completed within prescribed deadlines and according to organizational procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the unit standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the unit standard.
