PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner will be able to alter and finish off an erected steel structure for hand over to the client. Finishing off includes conducting any alterations to the steel structure as well as dismantling components or sections of the steel structure. Learners who achieve the applied competence described in this unit standard will contribute to the development of a professional community of structural steel erectors within the construction industry.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Carrying out amendments to steel structures.
  • Finishing off structural steel work.
  • Explaining handover procedures.
  • Dismantling steel structures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Methods of communicating amendments to the structure are identified and explained according to organisational procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Methods include, but is not limited to:
  • Revised drawings, site instructions and variation Orders.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Structures are checked for safe access in accordance with safety legislation and contract requirements.

    Amendments to structures are carried out in accordance with safety, client and maintenance personnel requirements.

    Structures are aligned and leveled in accordance with design engineer's specifications.

    In the event of surface damage, structural components/elements are recoated against corrosion in accordance with contract specifications.

    Intermittent quality checks are conducted, recorded, signed and certified in accordance with safety legislation and quality control system requirements.

    Final inspection process is explained in accordance with the requirements of the quality plan.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Lifting equipment and tools are used in accordance with safety requirements and manufacturers specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Lifting equipment and tools include, but are not limited to:
  • Cranes, grinders, cutting torches and wrench.

    Measuring equipment includes but is not limited to:
  • Theodolite, rules, tapes, Engineer's Levels, electronic equipment, paint thickness gauges and elcometer.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Structures are dismantled in accordance with safety requirements and manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Dismantled Components/elements of steel structure is stacked methodically for ease of transportation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Load shifting equipment is dismantled according to manufacturers` specifications and safety requirements.

  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
