PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this Unit Standard will be able to understand the complex processes and procedures involved in the proper training of a horse in preparation for racing it. Learners will also be able to establish any defects or unsoundness in a horse and then formulate a feeding plan accordingly. Learners will also be able to sequence the exercising of the race horse in order to execute the training programme.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Assessing the race horse.
  • Planning a training programme for a race horse.
  • Implementing a training programme for a race horse. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Assess the race horse. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The age of the race horse is determined with reference to its documentation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The breeding of the race horse is analysed with reference to its blood lines. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The conformation of the race horse is inspected to establish any defects and unsoundness. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The level of fitness of the race horse is established by referring to recent history. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Plan a training programme for a race horse. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A fitness programme is formulated in order to reach the optimal fitness for racing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A feeding plan is designed to match the fitness programme.

    A series of races are identified and formalised for possible nomination. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Vaccination plan is scheduled to fit in with the training plan.

    The sequence of exercising a horse is explained in order to develop fitness and prevent injury. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The training programme is documented according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The training programme is executed according to internationally accepted standards.
