PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard are required by people in the field of building and civil construction. Learners should be able to build masonry superstructures using solid units.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Prepare the work area and select, use and maintain tools, equipment and materials.
  • Set up vertical profiles and set out walls.
  • Install damp proof course, set up doorframes and mark position of window frames.
  • Build walls, build in doorframes, install and build in window frames.
  • Apply wall surface finishes.
  • Mark off, position and build in roof anchors (tie downs).
  • Build ancillary walls to complete structure.
  • Clean brickwork and clear building site.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are already competent in the following:
  • Communication at NQF Level 2.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2.
  • Use drawings and identify and use tools, equipment and materials for construction masonry site practice.
  • Set out and prepare construction masonry work areas.
  • Erect, use and dismantle access equipment.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Stated with Specific Outcomes/Assessment Criteria to which they apply. The typical scope of the unit standard includes:
  • Doors and window frames include but are not limited to: Steel, aluminium, concrete, timber, plastic (polypropylene, polyurethane).
  • Wall surface finishes include plasterwork, jointing and pointing.
  • Ancillary walls include gable walls, retaining walls, buttress walls, parapet walls, coping walls, curved walls, arches.
  • The scope of this unit standard include construction of corners in various bond types and skin thicknesses; including the garden wall with attached pier and T-Junction wall joints, half brick return corner, 1 brick corner in Stretcher bond, 1 brick corner in English bond, 1½ brick corner in English bond. These are pre-requisite skills for the progression to build elements into walls.
