PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are responsible for manufacturing jewellery using indigenous traditional jewellery manufacturing techniques from Southern Africa.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of traditional manufacturing techniques.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of traditional design practices.
  • Manufacture jewellery using traditional skills.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic business practice. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are already competent in:
  • Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard is aimed at any indigenous Southern African technique used for making jewellery. This includes but is not limited to beadwork, grass weaving, horsehair braiding, leatherwork, rubber carving, woodcarving, wire weaving and horn carving.

    Various jewellery manufacturing techniques are identified that are in line with the traditional indigenous South African jewellery industry.

    This could include Ndebele, Tsonga, Xhosa, Zulu, North Sotho, South Sotho, San, Venda and Tswana.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Traditional jewellery manufacturing techniques are described in terms of the methods applied and traditional background to jewellery manufacture. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The historical development of relevant techniques is explained in terms of the traditional indigenous South African jewellery industry. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The social and cultural relevance of the manufacturing techniques are described in the context of the South African jewellery manufacturing industry.

    Tools, materials and equipment are selected correctly for use prior to commencement in accordance with jewellery manufacturing requirements.

    The finish is executed according to job specifications.

    Housekeeping and occupational health and safety practices are adhered to in accordance with specified requirements.

    The consequences of not adhering to correct preparation, housekeeping and safe working practices are described in terms of the potential impact on occupational health and safety, productivity and quality.
