PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners within the Maritime Sector who work/wish to work as an officer on the bridge of a ship. This Unit Standard meets the needs of the sub-field and of the society by providing competent maritime officers who by understand and can apply the equipment found on the bridge of a ship and therefore contribute to a safer environment on the ship and at sea. The learner successfully completing this Unit Standard will gain essential knowledge and practical skills in/of required to understand the purpose and operation of bridge equipment that must be monitored during a bridge watch, which is needed to operate with confidence on a ships bridge.

The competencies achieved by the learner in this Unit Standard will, in the case of the Merchant Navy and the Fishing Industry, contribute to the economic upliftment of the country, and in the case of the South African Navy, contribute the preservation of human life and the defence of South African warships, territorial waters and/or area of responsibility, thus providing a safer and secure society for South African citizens.

Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Demonstrate understanding of bridge equipment.
  • Operate bridge equipment in the course of executing bridge watchkeeping duties.
  • Respond to bridge alarm systems.

    It is assumed that the learner has the following knowledge and skills:
  • Communication at NQF Level 4. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Bridge equipment includes but is not limited to navigation systems, radars, alarms, steering control systems, engine control systems, propulsion systems, gyros, integrated platform management systems, content management system and differential global positioning system.

    Demonstrate understanding of bridge equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An explanation is given of bridge equipment as per standard operating procedures and manuals. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • The explanation must include the purpose, operating principles, function, capabilities and limitations.
  • Equipment includes but is not limited to the integrated platform management systems, radar, echo sounder, the global positioning system, radios, the content management system, navigation systems, steering control systems and engine control systems.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Sources of possible error and ways in which information may be misrepresented are identified in order to determine methods of correction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A description is given of pre-start checks and start-up and shut-down procedures as per standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A description is given of procedures and standards for the calibration of bridge equipment as per standard operating procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Calibration includes but is not limited to identifying and cross-referencing errors and allowance for errors.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    A description is given of the procedure for the change-over of steering systems from manual to automatic control and vice versa and of the adjustment of controls for optimum performance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    A description is given of the reporting requirements for equipment failure which is according to standard operating procedures and standing orders.

    Operate bridge equipment in the course of executing bridge watchkeeping duties. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Start up and shut down procedures are managed in accordance with standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Deviations from expected performance are dealt with in accordance with standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Bridge equipment is used under normal and emergency operating conditions according to standard operating procedures and requirements for optimal operation at sea. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Equipment includes but is not limited to integrated platform management systems, radar, echo, global positioning system and radios.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Equipment problems and malfunctions are responded to according to expertise, scope or authority and standard operating procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Responded includes but is not limited to diagnosis, logged, corrected and reported.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Information received from all bridge systems is interpreted for the safe execution of duties in accordance with standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Engine and steering orders are issued which are appropriate to the intended manoeuvre, the prevailing conditions, selected propulsion options, and the capabilities and limitations of the engine control systems.

  • Turbine and normal; propeller pitches.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A description is given of the various bridge alarms with reference to indication and meaning. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Indication includes:
  • Colour of light; flashing or constant light; sound.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Bridge alarms are responded to according to operating procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Alarms include but are not limited to fire, flood, man overboard, equipment failure, gyro failure, integrated platform management systems failure and loss of differential global positioning system.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The overall situational picture is clarified and reported to the appropriate authority as required by procedures and standing orders. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Emergencies are responded to decisively, according to available information and calculated to protect the safety of vessel and crew.
