PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is useful for people who intend following a career in the diamond processing sector and who are required to fancy cut irregular shaped diamond gemstones. This process is known as fancy making.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Identify the equipment and tools used to make irregular shaped fancy diamond gemstones and describe their application.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the structure of diamond gemstones and the implications for making irregular shaped fancy diamond gemstones.
  • Locate diamond gemstones into appropriate equipment for making fancy shapes.
  • Make fancy irregular shaped diamond gemstones.
  • Conduct post-fancy making cleaning, checking and security activities.

    This unit standard is intended to promote general skills, knowledge and understanding of the diamond processing industry in the mining and minerals sector in order to ensure knowledgeable and informed workers.

    It is assumed that learners are already competent in:
  • Advance use of loupe to examine diamond gemstones.
  • Identify polishing grains and planes in diamond gemstones.
  • Explain the requirements for security of diamonds.

    The scope and context applies to the conversion of rough diamond gemstones into cut and polished diamond gemstones for sale into local and international markets.

    This unit standard applies to persons making fancy shape diamond gemstones under minimal supervision.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify the equipment and tools used to make irregular shaped fancy diamond gemstones and describe their application.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The tools and their components used to make irregular shaped fancy diamond gemstones are identified and their use in different applications is explained in terms of key features, applications and methods for use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance of fancy making is explained in relation to the process of diamond processing and the make and value of the finished polished diamond gemstone. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Practices are explained to maintain good housekeeping, occupational health and safety in the workplace and care of equipment in line with workplace specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of deviating from workplace specific practices are described in terms of potential impact on occupational health and safety, equipment, products and productivity.

    Demonstrate knowledge of the structure of diamond gemstones and the implications for making irregular shaped fancy diamond gemstones.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Irregular shaped fancy diamond gemstones are identified and classified into broad shape categories. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Irregular shape categories of fancy diamond gemstones must include:

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Two, three and four points in diamond gemstones are identified for different diamond types.

    The polishing grains in two, three and four point diamond gemstones are identified in terms of the crystallography of diamonds. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Problems that can be encountered when making irregular shaped fancy sawn and makeable diamond gemstones are described in terms of types of problems, key features and implications for methods to overcome such problems.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Advanced cutting and polishing hints and techniques for making irregular shaped fancy diamond gemstones for sawn and makeable stones are explained in terms of different applications and the consequences of using inappropriate processing techniques. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Locate diamond gemstones into appropriate equipment for making fancy shapes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Stones received are checked and examined to determine the appropriate process to create the required fancy shape. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Appropriate processes must include:
  • Fancy Blocking.
  • Fancy Shaping.
  • Fancy Lapping.
  • Fancy Polishing.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The required facets and dimensions for the selected irregular shaped fancy diamond are determined in consultation with the Marker. Stones are referred for supplementary preparatory processing, where necessary, in accordance with workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Appropriate personal protective clothing and equipment is selected and applied according to required standards of occupational health and safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Stones are set in the appropriate equipment for the selected process for making the selected fancy shape according to workplace specific operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Appropriate settings on the selected equipment are made for making the selected fancy shape according to workplace specific operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The equipment is ensured to have been correctly prepared for making the selected fancy shape, before applying the stone to the process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Occupational health and safety hazards are monitored during fancy stone making and remedial action is taken where necessary. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Make fancy irregular shaped diamond gemstones. 
    OUTCOME NOTES 
    Learners must demonstrate their ability to make four different irregular shaped fancy cut diamonds to the required standards.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Stones are processed using an appropriate methodology to address the given requirements for the selected fancy shape in line with the requirements as indicated by the Marker and within defined quality and output standards. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Defined quality and output standards will be found in the employer's:

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The processing equipment is frequently checked for any defects during the process of making fancy shapes. Remedial action is taken in line with workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Occupational health and safety hazards are monitored during making of fancy shapes and remedial action is taken where necessary. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Weights of diamond gemstones are ensured to be within the laid down tolerance levels after making fancy shapes. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Laid down tolerance levels will be found in the employer's:

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Diamond gemstones are removed from equipment after fancy making, cleaned and inspected for quality of finish in relation to workplace specifications. Remedial action required is taken in line with workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Housekeeping is exercised after making fancy shaped diamond gemstones in accordance with workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Good housekeeping must include:
  • Clean equipment and accessories.
  • Replace tools, equipment and unused consumables into correct storage facilities.
  • Maintenance of personal protective clothing and equipment.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Diamond gemstones are accounted for after making fancy shapes in accordance with the workplace security system.
