PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is useful for people who intend following a career in the diamond processing sector and who are required to shape diamond gemstones by hand. This process is known as fancy cutting.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Identify the equipment and tools used to shape diamond gemstones by hand and describe their application.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the structure of diamond gemstones and the implications for shaping them by hand.
  • Prepare to shape diamond gemstones by hand.

  • Conduct post-shaping cleaning, checking and security activities.

    It is assumed that learners are already competent in:
  • Advanced use of a loupe to examine a diamond gemstone.
  • Identify polishing grains and planes in diamond gemstones.
  • Set a sharp for cutting diamond gemstones by hand.
  • Operate and maintain a bruting machine.
  • Explain the requirements for security of diamonds.

    The scope and context applies to the conversion of rough diamond gemstones into cut and polished diamond gemstones for sale into local and international markets.

    This unit standard applies to persons shaping any type of diamond gemstones by hand under minimal supervision.

    The tools and their components used for shaping diamond gemstones by hand are identified and their use in different applications is explained in terms of key features, applications and methods for use.

    The process for shaping diamond gemstones by hand is explained in terms of the properties of diamonds and the effect of using diamonds to cut other diamonds. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Practices are explained to maintain good housekeeping, safety in the workplace and care of equipment in line with workplace specific requirements.

    Two, three and four points in diamond gemstones are identified for different diamond types. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Problems that can be encountered when shaping diamond gemstones by hand are described in terms of types of problems, key features, implications for bruting by hand and methods to overcome such problems. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The types of problems that can be encountered must include:

  • Flaws.
  • Impurities.

  • State of the sharp.
  • Length of the cutting stick.

    Advanced hints and techniques for shaping diamond gemstones by hand are explained in terms of different applications and the consequences of using inappropriate techniques.

    Prepare to shape diamond gemstones by hand. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Appropriate personal protective clothing and equipment is selected and applied according to required standards of occupational health and safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The equipment to be used for shaping by hand is checked to ensure it is ready for use. Any problems encountered are dealt with in terms of workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Stones received are checked and set in appropriate pots or dops. Any problems encountered are dealt with in terms of workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Set stones are located and secured in the chuck head of the bruting machine according to the desired fancy cut and tested to be correct. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    An appropriate sharp is selected according to the shape, size and specific type of shaping to be done. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Specific type of shaping must include:
  • Ovals.
  • Hearts.
  • Pears.
  • Marquise.
  • Trilliants.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The sharp is set to affect the shaping activity required and attached to the cutting stick.

    The operation of the machine is checked to ensure that the bruting activity will give the required results.

    Stones are shaped by hand according to instructions given in the parcel and defined quality and output standards.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The equipment, stone and the setting of the stone and sharp are frequently checked for any defects during the process of shaping by hand. Remedial action is taken in line with workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Weights of diamond gemstones are ensured to be within the laid down tolerance levels after shaping by hand.

    Laid down tolerance levels will be found in the employer's:

    Conduct post-shaping cleaning, checking and security activities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Diamond gemstones are removed from machine chuck heads and pots after shaping by hand, cleaned and inspected for quality of finish in relation to workplace specifications. Remedial action is taken in line with workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Good housekeeping is exercised after shaping diamond gemstones by hand. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Good housekeeping must include:
  • Collect diamond dust and store in the appropriate receptacle.
  • Clean pots, dops and shaping equipment.
  • Replace pots, dops, sharps and cutting stick into correct storage facilities.
  • Maintenance of personal protective clothing and equipment.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Diamond gemstones are accounted for after shaping by hand in accordance with the workplace security system.
