PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners within the Safety in Society sub-field who work/wish to work in the Correctional Services as Corrections Officials. This Unit Standard meets the needs of the sub-field and of the society by providing competent Corrections Officials who contribute to development and wellbeing of offenders.

A learner credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Promote health care practices.
  • Monitor and maintain environmental and personal hygiene of inmates.
  • Promote personal development of inmates.
  • Promote the psycho-social wellbeing of inmates.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An explanation is given of health care programmes available to the offender. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Health care needs and risks of inmates are identified in terms of displayed symptoms. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Referrals are made to the relevant health care practitioner according to policies and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Requests for health care services are processed according to organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Follow-ups on reported cases and referrals are conducted according to organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The provision of meals is monitored according to organisational procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Monitor and maintain environmental and personal hygiene of inmates. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The cleanliness of facilities is monitored and maintained according to organisational hygiene standards. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Facilities includes but is not limited to courtyards, exercise yards, cells, ablutions, dining areas, corridors and work stations.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Hygiene risks and hazards are reported according to organisational procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Risks and hazards include but are not limited to pests, litter, wet waste, overflowing bins, blocked sewerage system and old food.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The personal hygiene practices of inmates is promoted and maintained according to the organisational hygiene standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Availability of basic personal necessities for inmates is monitored according to the organisational procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Necessities includes but are not limited to toiletries, bedding and clothing.

    Promote personal development of inmates.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An explanation is given of personal development and employment programmes available to the offender. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Participation in development and employment programmes are promoted amongst the offenders. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Participation in sports, recreation, arts and culture is supervised according to organisational policies and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Participation in routine exercise is encouraged and supervised according to organisational procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Promote the psycho-social wellbeing of inmates. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The range of available psycho-social programs are explained and promoted according to organisational service delivery. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Programmes and services include but are not limited to social work services, psychological services, health and spiritual care programmes.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The psycho-social needs of inmates are identified according to displayed behaviour. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Needs includes but is not limited to social, emotional and spiritual needs.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Psycho-social referrals are made to the relevant service provider according to organisational policies and procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
