PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner is capable in converting customer description of his/her model vehicle and required part into a specific part number by identifying customer requirements, identifying specific parts of a system using organisation methodologies and demonstrating an understanding of specific vehicle systems.

This unit standard makes provision for the automotive retail industry with special reference to identifying vehicle parts/numbers with regard to vehicles in the following categories; Light commercial vehicles; passenger vehicles; recreational vehicles; Motor cycles; Tri-cycles; Quad cycles; Boats; Off Road (ATR) vehicles and earth moving equipment.

On achievement of this unit standard, the learner will be able to:
  • Verify customer requirements.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of specific vehicle systems.
  • Identify specific parts of a vehicle system using the organisation methodologies.

    The client's description of a part is understood/interpreted in order to issue the correct part.

    Interpreting may include but is not limited to confirming your interpretation thereof, utilising closed directed questioning methods.

    Product verification is confirmed by using open-ended probing questions.

    Vehicle systems are explained in terms of their various parts, operation and their relationship to the system. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    A vehicle system may include but is not limited to a fuel system, exhaust system, power train, suspension, body, electrical, engine and or a braking system.

    Specific components within vehicle systems are identified according to standard company procedures.

    A component may include but is not limited to a grouping of parts into a single unit.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    System components are located according to standard company procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    A company procedure may include but is not limited to the use of a micro-fish, bulletins, an electronic parts catalogue (EPC) and or supplier catalogues.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The organisation's method to identify vehicle system parts is explained in terms of processes and procedures.

    The method may include but is not limited to the use of a parts catalogue system.

    Parts, part number and quantity required are determined on the system according to standard procedures.

    Parts are physically verified in terms of the vehicle parts identification system. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed against the unit standard (including through RPL) may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance body (ETQA), or one with an appropriate memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or one with an appropriate MOU with the relevant ETQA.
