PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to perform all the actions and safety precautions necessary to perform the processes and procedures in order to collect and evaluate coal dust and stone dust mixtures.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the specified requirements pertaining to the sampling of a mixture of coal dust and stone dust.
  • Preparing to sample coal dust and stone dust.
  • Collecting coal dust and stone dust samples.
  • Evaluating coal dust and stone dust samples.

    The methods of sampling a mixture of coal dist and stone dust are explained in terms of health and safety and standard operating procedures.

    An explanation of the importance of adhering to a scheduled sampling programme is given in terms of the consequences to health, safety and the environment.

    Prepare to sample coal dust and stone dust.

    An explanation of the site selection process is given in accordance with the scheduled sampling programme.

    The required personal protective equipment (PPE) is selected, operational, fit for purpose and used in accordance with its design and standard operating procedures.

    The importance of examining and using the correct equipment to carry out sampling is explained in terms of the consequences to health and safety.

    Appropriate sampling tools and equipment are selected in order to meet sampling requirements.

    Arrangements to enter the workplace are made in accordance with standard operating procedures.

    The risks of entering the workplace without authorisation are explained in terms of its impact on health, safety and operations.

    Coal dust and stone dust samples are dealt with in accordance with legal prescripts and standard operating procedures.

    Sampling tools and equipment are cleaned and stored in accordance with standard operating procedures.

    Defective/broken tools and equipment are dealt with according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of failing to deal with defective/broken equipment are explained in terms of its impact on health, safety and operations.

    Reports are completed and disseminated in accordance with standard operating procedures and statutory requirements.
