PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the Electrical Engineering; Generation; Distribution; Transmission, Construction and Renewable Energy Sector.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Explain the requirements pertaining to maintaining lighting systems.
  • Prepare to maintain lighting systems.
  • Maintain lighting systems.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical engineering and construction environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Physical Planning and Construction. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the electrical engineering and construction environment. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The following knowledge, skills attitude and/or equivalent:
  • Introduction to industry and operational area.
  • Apply and adhere to electrical safety.

  • Use and care for hand tools.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The principle of operation of lamps and luminaire circuits is explained with reference to the type and manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The purpose of maintaining lighting systems is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of incorrect identification of lighting systems to be maintained are given. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Fault finding method on a luminaire, in a lighting system that do not emit light is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The factors causing loss of light emitted by lamps is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The effect of relevant poisonous, toxic and dangerous materials on the human body is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Consequences of damaging, or damaged luminaires with regards to the ingress protection rating of the luminaires are explained as per manufacturer's specifications , work site procedures and standards.

    Prepare to maintain a lighting system.

    Appropriate documentation is acquired. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Job instructions are communicated with the team leader.

    Personal protective equipment is selected, examined and used in a manner that protects the individual. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Tools, material, work platforms and equipment are selected and transported to the work site. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The work site is examined for hazardous conditions and are addressed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The lighting system to be maintained is identified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The consequences of not preparing to maintain in line with specified requirements are explained with reference to personal and team safety, impact on the environment, production costs and lost time.

    Maintain lighting systems. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Hazards and risks directly related to maintaining lighting systems are identified and addressed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The circuit is switched off, locked out and tested to ensure that it is dead. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The lighting systems are maintained according to the appropriate practices. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Safety, good housekeeping and correct environmental practices are followed before, during and after work. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The consequences of not maintaining lighting systems in line with specified requirements are explained with reference to personal and team safety, impact on the environment, production costs and lost time.

    Prepare and test the maintained lighting systems for operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The maintained lighting systems are tested to ensure compliance to the SANS 1-0142 wiring code. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    This includes continuity, earth continuity, and insulation resistance.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The power is switched on and the operation of the maintained lighting systems is checked. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tools, material, work platforms and equipment are cleaned, inspected and stored according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The relevant documentation was completed correctly within the agreed time frames. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The consequences of not reporting and performing housekeeping duties and the incorrect disposal of faulty lamps in line with specified requirements are explained with reference to personal and team safety, impact on the environment, production costs and lost time.

  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
