PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the Electrical Engineering; Generation, Distribution, Transmission, Construction and Renewable Energy Sectors.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Install electrical wire ways according to specified instructions, under supervision in accordance with statutory requirements to distribute electricity.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical engineering and construction environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Physical Planning and Construction. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the electrical engineering and construction environment. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The following knowledge, skills attitude and/or equivalent:
  • Safe handling of hand tools.
  • Safe handling of portable electrical power tools.
  • General electrical safety.

  • Wire way installations includes surface and/or flush mounted techniques.
  • Specific range statements are provided in the body of the unit standard where they apply to particular specific outcomes or assessment criteria.
  • Pre-worked areas include marking on structure prepared by supervisor and work is carried out under supervision.

    Specified wire ways, and materials are Identified and obtained according to job and statutory requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Wire ways = Conduit-flexible, metal or pvc, ducting-metal or pvc, power skirting-cable trays or busbar truncking channels and racks.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Specified tools and materials are identified and obtained according to job requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Portable drilling machine, pipe vice, range of appropriate engineering hand tools, spirit level, mitre, chalk line, reamers and stocks and dies.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Personal Protective equipment is identified and obtained according to work place standards and procedures and OHS Act. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Overalls, Hard hat, Gloves, Safety shoes, Safety glasses or shields.

    Prepare to install electrical wire ways.

    Work area is inspected and prepared for installation as per the marked out layout, job instructions and work site standards.

    Specified wire ways, and materials are selected according to given instructions.

    Wire ways = Conduit-flexible, metal or pvc, ducting-metal or pvc, power skirting-cable trays or busbar truncking, channels and racks.

    Specified type of tools are selected and checked for serviceability according to job and statutory requirements.

    Surfaces are prepared for the installation of wire ways as per job instructions.

    Wire ways are marked out as per pre-determined measurements, cut, formed and/or bent according to planned requirements, obstacles, environment (structure), using appropriate tools and equipment in accordance with work place standards and statutory requirements.

    Ensure that all ends are de-burred.

    Reaming, filing.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Wire ways are assembled/joined and mounted according to planned and environmental (structure) requirements, in accordance with work place standards & statutory requirements.

    Assemble: Connecting of inspection boxes, extensions pieces, termination boxes, extension box, joining through gluing, screwing, clipping.

    Adhering to Safety precautions and statutory requirements ensuring the safety of oneself and others.

    Wire ways must be made electrically continuous in accordance with regulations.

    Electrically continuous: Bonding together and earthing of metal type wire ways.
