PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful for persons that will be involved in the maintenance and repair of mining equipment and specifically when required to perform a detailed inspection on an isolated overhead line.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Explain the requirements pertaining to the detailed inspection on an isolated overhead line.
  • Prepare to inspect the isolated overhead line.
  • Inspect the overhead line.
  • Test the overhead line and prepare for operation and/or production.

    The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and contribute to the upliftment and economic growth of the mining and minerals sector.

    This unit standard is intended to promote general skills, knowledge and understanding of performing a detailed inspection on an isolated overhead line in the mining and minerals sector in order to ensure knowledgeable and informed workers.

  • Identification of defects, for example, loose terminations, which will only be apparent by de-energising the equipment, or using where necessary, tools or test equipment (or both).

    The various methods of cleaning an isolated overhead line are explained with reference to cleaning. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Lockout procedures are explained with reference to specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The principle of operation and function of an overhead line is explained with reference to its application in a mining environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The explanation of the risk related to inspecting an isolated overhead line, shows a clear understanding of the possible critical workplace and work related hazards. The explanation also describes the recommended controls to deal with the risks associated with each hazard.

    Personal protective equipment is examined and used in a manner that protects the individual in accordance with specified requirements.

    Tools, material and equipment are selected, examined and transported in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Permission to enter the workplace where applicable is obtained in accordance with specified requirements.

    The isolated overhead line to be inspected is identified in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The workplace is examined for hazardous and substandard conditions, which are addressed in accordance with specified requirements.

  • Personal protective equipment.
  • Tools, material and test equipment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The workplace is examined for hazardous and sub-standard conditions. Critical hazards and sub-standard conditions encountered in a particular context are addressed in a manner consistent with documented best practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Hazards and risks directly related to the inspection of the overhead line are identified and addressed in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Lockout procedures are adhered to in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Tools, material and equipment are used in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The overhead line is inspected and tested in accordance with specified and legal requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The consequences of not inspecting the overhead trolley line in accordance with specified requirements are explained with reference to personal and team safety, impact on the environment, production costs and lost time.

  • Condition of serving on the conductors.

    The consequences of not inspecting the overhead line in line with specified requirements are explained with reference to personal and team safety, impact on the environment, production costs and lost time.

    The consequences of not testing the overhead line and not preparing for operation in line with specified requirements are explained with reference to personal and team safety, impact on the environment, production costs and lost time.

    Notes to Assessors:

    Assessors should keep the following principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Remember we want to declare the person competent in terms of the title. Where assessment at title level is unmanageable, then focus assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Rather make sure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality, as specified in this unit standard, that the candidate can achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
  • All assessments should be conducted in line with the following well documented principles of assessment: appropriateness, fairness, manageability, integration into work or learning, validity, direct, authentic, sufficient, systematic, open and consistent.
