PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard has been developed for the GIS occupational area and is intended for persons who aim to achieve career advancement by gaining GIS skills leading to qualification based on unit standards. A person who has successfully completed this unit standard will have an understanding of how to perform 2.5D vector surface queries under supervision.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Understand and explain the principles of a TIN.
  • Perform simple surface derived analysis under supervision.
  • Calculate profiles under supervision.
  • Generate visualisations of TINs under supervision.
  • Calculate volumes from surfaces under supervision.

    A surface made up of regular and irregular triangles is understood and can be explained in relation to the principles of a TIN. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The learner understands and explains attributes of a TIN needed to perform basic 2.5D vector surface queries. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Surface, Slope, Aspect, Point value, Position, Gradient, Orientation.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The learner understands and explains advantages of a TIN to perform basic 2.5D vector surface queries. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Efficient data storage, Efficient use in Models, Visualisation, deriving further information.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The learner understands and explains the basic 2.5D vector surface queries and applications that can be performed with TIN.

    Including but not limited to runoff, population distribution, temperature studies, Site selection, Environmental Impact Assessment, Visibility analysis, Diffusion modelling, presence or absence of barriers.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures.

  • Two and a half dimensional data consists of points with planemetric coordinates (E.g. Latitude and Longitude) and a variable value at each point. E.g.. Elevation, depth, temperature.

    Notes to Assessors:
  • This unit standard refers specifically to surfaces with planimetric co-ordinates and a variable such as elevation or temperature.
  • Watershed identification will be included in another unit standard dealing with flow lines, catchments, etc. at a more advanced level.
  • Nautical profile refers to the sectional profile found on nautical charts.
