PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard are required by people in the field of mechanical engineering.

Qualifying learners can carry out engineering milling operations with a range of accessories and tools. The results are checked with precision measuring instruments.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Explain and discuss milling operations.
  • Prepare for milling operations and maintain milling machine.
  • Perform milling operations.
  • Finish milling operation. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    This unit standard has been designed as part of a progression. It is one of a series of unit standards for milling in the engineering machining skills area.

    The credits allocated to this unit standard assume that a learner has already learned to:
  • Operate and monitor a milling machine NQF Level 2. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Milling operations include but are not limited to indexing, differential index, milling angles, vertical/horizontal boring, milling radiuses, pitch drilling, gang, end, slot, form, slitting, dovetail.

    The scope and level of this unit standard is determined by the ranges as indicated under the specific outcomes.

    The learner should be able to work autonomously with minimal supervision.

    Explain and discuss milling operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Milling operations are explained to reflect the operating procedure for the specific operation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Specific operation include but is not limited to indexing, differential index, milling angles, vertical/horizontal boring, milling radiuses, pitch drilling, machine tapping, reaming.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The purpose and process of different milling operations are explained to reflect implications of malfunctioning. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The relationship between speeds and feeds is explained in terms of the requirement of the milling operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Gear cutting procedures are explained to reflect the use of different formulae and indexing. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare for milling operations and maintain milling machine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Drawings are interpreted to determine sequence of step by step operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Materials and tools required at workstation are checked in accordance with drawing specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Materials and tools include but not limited to dividing heads, dividing table, cutters, slit saws, ferrous and non-ferrous, boring heads, drills, reamers.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Measuring equipment required for a work piece is selected in accordance with drawing specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Measuring equipment includes but not limited to protractor, pitch gauge, height gauge, micrometers and vernier and dial test indicators.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The sequence of milling operations is determined as required by male and female tapers. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Milling speeds and feeds are determined and selected for the different cutting operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Required milling accessories/attachments are selected in accordance with the work piece requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Accessories/attachments include but not limited to dividing head, rotary table, spindle, tail stock.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The work piece is set-up and secured without damage to work piece or machine. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Perform milling operations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The sequence of milling operations is performed as required by male and female tapers. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Milling operations include determine angle, set angle, calculate angle.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Milling machine is monitored while in operation, making adjustments to speeds and feeds where required. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Adjustments include but are not limited to check finishing on gears, gear ratios, re-sharpening tools.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Problems are recognised and addressed in accordance with standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Milling operations are performed in accordance with occupational health and safety requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Milling operations are performed in accordance with the dimensions, drawing specifications and the specified tolerances. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The maximum tolerance is +- 0,05 mm.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Finish milling operation. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Finishing includes but is not limited to apply quality checks, take corrective action and report on operations.

    Milled component is quality checked for non-conformances. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Job and time sheets are completed in accordance with organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Housekeeping requirements are met in accordance with workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Housekeeping requirements include but are not limited to clean and tidy work environment, storing, cleaning.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Incidents reflecting changes or unsafe conditions during milling operation are addressed in accordance with workplace and occupational health and safety requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Reporting requirements are met in accordance with workplace procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    The assessment will be governed by the policies and guidelines of the relevant Education and Training Quality Assuror (ETQA) that has jurisdiction over this field of learning.

    The assessor will (at the very least) be accredited and have a relevant qualification and be a subject matter expert in this learning area and at least have 3 years experience in the skills specific area.

    The learner can be assessed against this unit standard to obtain credits or as part of an integrated assessment for a qualification:
