PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard was developed as a fundamental unit standard to be used by any discipline. A person who has successfully completed this unit standard will understand how to interpret hard copy maps.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Understand what maps are.
  • Understand how to orientate a map.
  • Relate the map to the real world.

    The credit calculation is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in terms of the following outcomes or areas of learning when starting to learn towards this unit standard.

    The legend is understood and features on the map are interpreted and related to the real world.

    Orientational indicators are understood and explained in terms of hard copy maps. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Including but not limited to north arrow, magnetic declination.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Scale is understood and explained in terms of hard copy maps. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The learner identifies different types of printed maps.

    Including but not limited to street maps, topographical maps, thematic maps, aeronautical charts.

    The learner understands and explains maps as selective and generalised representations of the real world.

    The features on the map are identified in the real world. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Coordinates and grids on maps are understood and explained in relation to map orientation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The map is turned so that it correctly lines up with the surroundings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The relative location of different features in relation to each other can be described as read from hard copy maps.

    Relate the map to the real world. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Distances and directions between known points are calculated from the map. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A hike route is planned by generating a series of consecutive points with the distances and direction between each. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An orientational route is plotted on the map using point directions and distances given. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A cross section indicating the height profile of the route is drawn from the map. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Features at given coordinates are identified in terms of hard copy maps. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Coordinates of specific points are calculated from the map. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Heights and contours are used to understand and explain the relief of the land.

    Shape of contours, spot height, trigonomical beacons, valley, hill, plain.
     


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures. 

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
    Essential embedded knowledge will be assessed through assessment of the specific outcomes in terms of the stipulated assessment criteria.
