PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to explain the functionality of a specific circuit diagram and explain the wiring links between components. Learners will also be able to identify and select the correct test equipment for specific types of tests and then be able to connect, set-up and use the equipment by adhering to the required safety precautions.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Interpreting modular equipment circuit diagrams up to component level.
  • Interpreting railway station wiring plans.
  • Employing specific advanced test equipment. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this Qualification will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4 or equivalent.
  • Communication at NQF Level 4 or equivalent. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Test equipment may include but is not limited to Oscilloscopes, data analysers, spectrum analysers, power supplies, logic probes, frequency counters, and digital multi-meter. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Interpret modular equipment circuit diagrams up to component level. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Modular equipment circuit diagrams may include but is not limited to Spoorplan, Remote Control Systems, Train Detection Systems and Power Equipment.

    Circuit diagrams for specific types of equipment are verified against data captured. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The functionality of a specific circuit is described in terms of electrical engineering principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The function of the components in a circuit diagram is explained according to electrical engineering principles. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Interpret railway station wiring plans.

    The equipment in a station layout plan is described in geographical terms. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The wiring links between the components is described by pointing them out on a plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A control sheet is designed according to a station layout plan. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Employ specific advanced test equipment. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Advanced test equipment may include but is not limited to Oscilloscopes, Data Scopes, Function Generators, Cable Fault Locators and Spectrum Analysers.

    The specific test equipment is identified and selected for the specific type of test. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Test equipment is checked for certification in accordance with organisational policy and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Test equipment is connected and set up according to manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Test equipment is used in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Safety precautions to be adhered to are explained with examples of safety measures employed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Consequences of using incorrect type of equipment for testing is explained in terms of its impact on results. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Results are verified against manufacturer's performance specifications in order to establish integrity.
