PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
In the W&R industry much stock is received from suppliers in large cartons/packs. These "bulk" packs are put into the storeroom and are "broken" into smaller packs to be inter-branched to stores from the Distribution Centre. These smaller packs are taken from the storeroom to fill display shelves in smaller packs or even singles and could be sold to customers in smaller packs or singles.

This unit standard is intended for those individuals who are responsible for breaking the bulk pack and storing and labelling the smaller packs or single units and packing them for dispatch.

Qualifying learners will be capable of:
  • Receiving bulk stock.
  • Breaking bulk and storing packs.
  • Packing items.
  • Labelling items.

    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:

    Bulk stock to be broken into smaller packs is identified and sorted as it applies to the organisation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Bulk stock to be broken is stored in demarcated areas as required by the organisation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Organisational procedures for the breaking of bulk are explained with reference to specific stock items. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Procedures may include, but are not limited to:
  • Where it takes place, when it takes place, whether broken into singles/inners/shrinkwraps and security requirements.

    Break bulk and store packs.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Bulk is broken into required units according to organisational procedures taking into account the safety procedures and the characteristics of the product.

    The method of storage is explained with regard to the type of items to be stored. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Item types, may include but is not limited to:
  • Nature of product [solid, liquid, and gas], high value items, size, weight, dangerous items, perishables, edibles, vulnerable products and bond storage for customs clearance.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Storage is explained in relation to the legislation relevant to the organisation and the merchandise. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Relevant legislation may include, but is not limited to:
  • Occupational Health and Safety Act, South African Bureau of Standards Codes and Dangerous Goods Act.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Broken bulk is stored according to organisational procedures.

    Safe working procedures and housekeeping practices are applied when packing items according to organisational procedures and stock characteristics.

    Stock characteristics may include, but is not limited to:
  • Fragile, high value, dangerous, items requiring wrapping, items to be packed upright and perishables.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The quantity and type of packing material and packing tools required are identified and prepared in relation to the packing requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Defects and damages are identified and handled in accordance with organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Goods are packed into the appropriate containers for transportation purposes following organisational procedures.

    Containers may include, but is not limited to:
  • Carrier bags, pallets, rollertainers, tote bins and cartons.
