PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for individuals dealing with the provision of advice and the selling and promotion of skin care products/product ranges through customer interaction in a retail environment.

Individuals credited with this unit standard will be able to demonstrate knowledge applicable to skin care in order to add value to customer service through the identification of most appropriate products, the correct communication of product features, benefits, use and application according to client/customer needs, based on the analysis of the individuals skin type, condition and skin care routines.

Product knowledge gained will enable effective problem solving, trouble-shooting and the addressing of customer needs in accordance with the standard operational procedures and specifications of the product manufacturer and the organisation.

Qualifying learners will be capable of:

    Skin types, abnormalities and skin conditions are identified and described according to characteristics.

    Personal lifestyle and external factors impacting on the skin's condition is explained according to standard industry practice.

  • Cleaning, toning, moisturising, exfoliating and masks for specific treatments.

    The categories and ranges of products are identified as they apply to the organisation.

    The chemical make-up of skin care product ranges are described as they relate to uses, benefits, safety precautions and effects.

    The correct use and application of skin-care products are explained and demonstrated as they apply to specific skin types and manufacturer's requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Promote skin care products to meet individual needs. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Products include but are not limited to oil, water, alcohol and cream based products incorporating but not limited to cleansers, masks, exfoliates, eye makeup removers, toners, day-creams, night creams, eye-creams, throat creams, concentrates and other types of specialisation moisturisers and skin care products.

    Individual customers' skin types and conditions are assessed, explained and communicated according to organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Referrals and the need for third party interventions are discussed with the client according to organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An appropriate skin care programme is assembled and recommended according to individual requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Use and application of selected skin care products are explained and demonstrated according to manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Recommendations to expand skin-care regimes are communicated according to organisational procedures.

  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard and the related Exit Level Outcomes of the Qualification must be accredited by the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance (ETQA) body.

  • Skin Care products include oil, water, alcohol and cream based products incorporating but not limited to cleansers, masks, exfoliators, eye makeup removers, toners, day-creams, night creams, eye-creams, throat creams, concentrates and other types of specialisation moisturisers and skin care products.
  • Skin care products within the retail environment is usually limited to over the counter products and will exclude cosmeceutical and specialist dermatological products used under medical supervision.
  • Skin types within this context include balanced, oily, dry, combination, sensitive, young, adult and mature skins.
  • Skin conditions include pimples, acne, eczema, psoriasis, infections, sensitive, dehydrated.
  • Skin abnormalities include physical trauma, rashes, staining, inflammation, scarring, blisters and cuts to the skin.
  • Personal life-style conditions influencing the selectin of skin care products include for example sunbathing, skin protection, pollution, diet, dehydration, and water consumption.
  • The chemical make-up of skin care products include the correct use of products, frequency of use, benefits of products as it relates to skin types and conditions, potential effects of specific product types when utilised incorrectly such as allergic reactions, bacterial infections, sensitivity and skin rashes, specific product terminology including but not limited to organic, PH balanced, natural, bio, antioxidants, alpha hydroxy acids.
  • Recommendation on skin care products need to consider skin type, condition of the skin, individual needs, and products available in the product range.
