PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful for people who are required to analyte samples by means of Ultraviolet-Visible Spectrophotometer (UV-Vis).

This unit standard is intended to promote general skills in and knowledge of analysing samples by means of Ultraviolet-Visible Spectrophotometer (UV-Vis) in the mining and minerals sector.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:

    The principal components of the UV-Vis spectrophotometer are identified and their primary functions are described in accordance with operational requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Principal components must include:
  • Quartz and glass cuvettes.
  • Detectors.
  • Light sources.
  • Sample introduction system.
  • Mono-chromator.
  • Readout systems.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The effects of analyte concentration, light path and intensity are explained with reference to optimal transmittance (Beer-Lambert Law).

    The relevance of stability and specificity of developed colour are explained with reference to preparation of standard and sample solutions.
