PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard reflects the skills, knowledge and values required to remove and replace off-the-road (OTR) wheels and tyres. Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Remove wheels from OTR machines/equipment and tyres from wheels.
  • Refit tyres to wheels and wheels to OTR machines/equipment.
  • Apply knowledge of maintenance requirements for OTR tyres.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The following competencies are assumed:
  • Communication, NQF Level 1.
  • Mathematical Literacy, NQF Level 1.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Off-the-road (OTR) machines/equipment includes but is not limited to military applications, cranes, earthmoving equipment and mining equipment.

    'Wheel' refers to the entire wheel assembly, including but not limited to components such as rims, inner and outer flanges, bead seat band and lock rings but excludes the tyre.

    The context will determine whether the entire wheel and tyre assembly will be removed and replaced, or whether the wheel will remain secured to the machine/equipment hub, while only the tyre is removed and replaced. The learner must be assessed in both of these contexts in order to meet the requirements of this unit standard.
  • Tyre types include tubeless, tubed type, crossply and radial.
  • The individual will work as a member of a team throughout the process of removing and refitting tyres and wheels.
  • The learner is not required to operate specialised tyre handling machines.
  • Further information on the scope and level of this unit standard is indicated by range statements related to the specific outcomes or assessment criteria.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Remove wheel from OTR machine/equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Safe working practices and procedures are applied throughout the process. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Safe working practices must include machine/equipment lockout and establishment of level working surfaces.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Wheel type is identified to enable manufacturer's removal procedure to be followed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tools and equipment to remove the wheel are selected in accordance with task requirements and used in accordance with manufacturers' procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The machine/equipment is raised and secured in accordance with task requirements and manufacturers' procedures to enable the wheel to be removed safely. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The tyre is completely deflated before the wheel is removed in accordance with company procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The wheel is removed in accordance with machine/equipment and tyre manufacturers' procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Relevant contribution is made to the achievement of team goals. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Remove OTR tyre from wheel. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Tyres are tubed type and tubeless. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tyre and tube assembly is removed from wheel in accordance with company and manufacturer's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tools and equipment used to remove the tyre from the wheel are selected in accordance with task requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Individual contribution supports the achievement of team goals. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The team may consist of two or more people.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Removal activities are performed safely without damage or injury to self, fellow workers, tools and equipment, tubes and tyres, wheels, machines/equipment or the environment. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Refit OTR tyre to wheel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tyre is fitted onto wheel in accordance with manufacturer's procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    In the case of tubed tyres, this includes fitting of tube and/or flap.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Components of wheel are visually checked for condition and cleaned as required, and any damage and/or faults are identified and reported to the relevant personnel in accordance with company procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Relevant tools and equipment are selected and used to fit the tyre in accordance with wheel and tyre type and manufacturers' specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The tyre is inflated to tyre manufacturer's recommended operating pressure while secured in a safety retaining device, and the valve core and cap are replaced. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Refitting activities are performed safely without damage or injury to self, fellow workers, tools and equipment, tube and tyres, wheels, machines/equipment or the environment. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Refit wheel to OTR machine/equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    All relevant safety procedures are followed when refitting wheel to machine/equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Wheel is fitted to wheel hub without damage to components or OTR machine/equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Wheel nuts are replaced, tightened and torqued to machine/equipment manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Tyre pressure is checked and if necessary tyre is inflated in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Machine/equipment is safely lowered and jacks and stands are removed in accordance with manufacturers' procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Complete the work process and inspect refitted wheel.

    Feedback is given to appropriate personnel and relevant documents are completed in accordance with company requirements.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The integrated assessment should be based on a summative assessment guide. The guide will specify how the assessor will assess different aspects of the performance and will include:
    > Evaluating evidence in a portfolio of evidence, particularly projects which integrate various aspects of the unit standard and which demonstrate the integration of knowledge, skills and values, and the development of the critical outcomes.

  • Assessment of competence for this unit standard is based on experience acquired by the learner in the workplace, within the particular tyre context. The assessment process should cover the explicit tasks required for the unit standard as well as the understanding of the concepts and principles that underpin the process.
    The assessment process should also establish how the learning process has advanced the Critical Cross-field Outcomes.
  • The learner may choose in which language he/she wants to be assessed. This should be established as part of a process of preparing the learner for assessment and familiarising the learner with the approach being taken.
  • Assessors should also evaluate evidence that the learner has been performing consistently over a period of time.
  • The assessment for this unit standard can be done in conjunction with assessment for other unit standards related to a qualification, and in conjunction with the assessment for the qualification as a whole.
