PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for individuals providing volunteer services in a community, organisation or workplace and who are required to contribute to and participate in activities specific to a selected environment.

Environments in which volunteer services can be provided will include:
  • Sport: Involvement in sport coaching, officiating, administration and hosting of events in all codes of sport at all levels.
  • Events: Participation and support of events such as conferencing, exhibitions, expos, workshops, indabas, product launches, marketing and retail and promotional events.
  • Tourism: Involvement in tourism promotions, destination promotion, functions, guided experiences and similar initiatives by the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT) for tourism promotion in South Africa.
  • Community Development: Involvement in community outreach programmes and community development initiatives.
  • Recreation: Involvement in Leisure and Recreation activities or events including festivals, music and cultural events, celebrations, coordinating competitions and fundraising.
  • Social Welfare programmes and initiatives: Involvement in social welfare programmes and initiatives such as feeding programmes or victim empowerment.

    Individuals found competent against this unit standard will be responsible for applying the principles of volunteering within a selected area of operation and will in particular be capable of:
  • Displaying an understanding of the specific operational environment in which volunteer services will be provided.
  • Determining personal and operational requirements as it applies to the area in which services will be provided.
  • Performing services according to operational and protocol requirements.

  • Anyone assessing an individual against this unit standard must meet the assessor requirements of the relevant ETQA. In particular, such assessors must demonstrate that they assess in terms of the scope and context defined in all the range statements.
