PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard introduces the learner to the concepts of work and play. The learner will be able to effectively design community based recreation programmes by taking into consideration the dynamics of work and play.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Examine the phenomenon of work and evaluate its outcomes.
  • Analyse the characteristics of work, play, leisure, and recreation.
  • Describe the concepts of work in relation to culture, gender, and life stages.
  • Compile a holistic perspective of work, play, leisure and recreation.
  • Examine the theory of play.
  • Design a recreation programme with the focus on work and play.

  • Explain leisure and recreation concepts, at NQF Level 4.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Knowledge and skill in the area of Recreation Theories may be required of people working in the recreation industry for a number of reasons, including:
    > Providing a conceptual foundation for practice in the recreation industry.
    > Providing a body of knowledge on which recreation as a profession is based.
    > Providing an historical and philosophical context for recreation.
    > Helping to define parameters of business.
    > Providing a basis for justifying the existence of the recreation industry, and the allocation of resources.
    > Providing a basis for justifying policy and provision; accountability.
    > Providing a background for decision-making regarding policy and provision.
    > Providing a basis for forecasting trends in recreation, and of the impact of recreation on other parts of society.

    The place and role of work in peoples' lives is described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Key societal changes that have resulted from or have influenced the evolution of work, and its place and role in people's lives is explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Key societal changes may include - relationship between home and work, impact of the industrial revolution, technology, segmentation of time, productivity improvements, work ethics, urbanisation, government legislation.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The social and psychological outcomes of work are examined. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Outcomes may include - status, self-esteem, time management, economic security, urban planning, human geography, education, social interaction, health, and well-being.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The extent to which leisure and recreation can meet the identified outcomes in the absence of paid work is described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The extent to which work can meet the leisure and recreation needs of the individual are closely examined. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Needs may include - rest and/or relaxation, work contrast, skill development and mastery, self-expression, personal growth, adult education, excitement and contest, exercise and health, companionship and belonging, spiritual and aesthetic development.

    The characteristics of paid work as they relate to the characteristics of leisure and recreation are described.

    The characteristics of unpaid work as they relate to the characteristics of leisure and recreation are described.

    Describe concepts of work in relation to ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status, and life stages.

    The concepts of work in terms of socio-economic status and its implications for leisure and recreation are described.

    Life stages may include - baby, toddler, childhood, pre-teens, adolescence, young adulthood, adulthood with dependant child, adulthood, middle age, empty nesters, older adult, recently retired, active elderly, infirm elderly.

    Compile a holistic perspective of work, leisure and recreation.

    Work in terms of the extension of work into leisure and recreation is distinguished.

    The integration of work in terms of work, leisure and recreation is examined. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The factors, which create barriers and constraints and those, that enhance play are described. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Factors include - environmental, temporal, spatial, cultural, social, bahavioral, psychological, economic, equipment, design, safety, facilitation, freedom from supervision, access, attitudes, rules, adventure, perceived and real dangers, gender, natural resources, skills, facilities, weather temperature, light.

    Examine the theories and characteristics of play.

    The characteristics of plays, games and sport are described and differentiated.

    The characteristics of play to the different life stages are compared and explained.

    The examination correlates the effects of play on the human condition. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Effects of play - catharsis, skill development and mastery, self expression, personal growth and development (emotional, physical, intellectual, spiritual and cultural).

    Design a recreation programme with the focus on work and play.
