PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to students who are engaged in community music making and want to develop their creative selves. Students credited with this unit standard are able to devise, compose and write down their original musical compositions. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Communication at NQF Level 4.

It is assumed that learners have been involved in community music such as choirs or other musical activities. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
The following scope and context apply to the whole unit standard:
  • Composing original pieces for instruments and voices using motifs, scales, chords, and rhythmic devices from Western and African traditions, and writing them down in staff or graphic notation.

    Material is utilized in an unusual and striking way to compose a short original piece of music.

    An interesting musical structure that holds the listener's attention; moving away from the conventions of the past, is created.

    The intended meaning of the music piece is explained.

    Musical ideas in the score are expressed clearly.

    The correct details for each voice or instrument are allocated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Musical notes and expression to facilitate performance are presented. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A final fair copy of the score that uses a software notation programme is produced.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
