The learner achieving this unit standard will be able to:
  • Use symbols, signs and body language in support of learning, informing, educating, instructing, persuading, negotiating, etc.
  • Interpret information presented in symbols, signs and body language.
  • Design and create symbols, signs and body language which are relevant to a range of recipients and purposes.
  • Know when and in what settings to use non-verbal communication.
  • Communicate in a variety of cultural settings in which they can extend their learning and practice into other areas of applied agricultural, social and development research and practice.
  • Create a foundation for effective communication, dialogue and interaction at many levels for various purposes (e.g. education, instruction, etc.).

  • Basic understanding of the concept and use of symbols, signs and body language in human communication.

    The context and audience of a written or verbal communication are assessed to determine the need for new symbols, signs and body language. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The information to be conveyed in the written or verbal communication is assessed to identify new symbols, signs and body language. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Relevant symbols, signs and body language are designed and produced to enhance the written or verbal communication.

    Consequences of inappropriate symbols, signs and body language are determined to guide the development of new symbols, signs and body language.

    Selected and/or designed symbols, signs and body language are applied to/incorporated into the written or verbal communication method to enhance the written or verbal communication.

    The effectiveness of the symbols, signs and body language is evaluated in terms of the value they added to the written or verbal communication. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Results of the evaluation are recorded in a format that easily informs the future choices of symbols, signs and body language.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed, (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
