PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for people who are, or you wish to be involved in the processes and procedures required in respect of cargo claims. Individuals who are credited with this Unit Standard will be able to, on discovery of loss, discrepancy or damage to cargo, organise, initiating action and initiate and finalise claims.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Initiating action in the event of loss or damage to cargo within carrier's time bar limitations.
  • Endorsing documentation for the purpose of preserving rights of claim.
  • Communicating with affected parties.
  • Initiating and finalising claim action.
  • Maintaining appropriate records. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will be assumed competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.

    Initiate action in the event of loss or damage to cargo within carrier's time bar limitations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Carrier's conditions of carriage are identified and carrier's time bar limitations specified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Notice of loss or damage to cargo is sent to all parties in accordance with organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Confirmation of receipt of notice of damaged cargo is received from all parties. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    In the event of damaged cargo an inspection is done and noted, photographs taken and filed in accordance with standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Endorse documentation for the purpose of preserving rights of claim.

    A Notice of claim to be lodged is processed in accordance with standard operating procedures.

    Responses received from all parties are noted and filed in accordance with standard operating procedures.

    Follow-up with client is undertaken is taken in accordance with standard operating procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The client's price claim is submitted to all affected parties. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Responses received from affected parties are noted and filed in accordance with standard operating procedures.

    Correspondence is maintained on an ongoing basis between all affected parties within the carrier's time bar limitations. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Initiate and finalise claim action.

    Final notice is sent to all effected parties requesting closure and finalisation of the claim.
