This Unit Standard is for persons in the field of freight forwarding who must orientate themselves in order to read a map and understand time zones, hemispheres, continents, countries, cities, oceans, borders, ports, trade routes.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Interpreting maps.
  • Locating major geographical points.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of socio-political and geographical aspects of the world.
  • Mapping a trade route. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will be assumed competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of ability to read maps in explained in the context of freight forwarding. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The importance refers to determining distances, time zones, climatic areas, constraints to cargo movement and political entities.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Various types of map are analysed in order to identify key geographic features. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Key geographic features may include but is not limited to mountains, rivers, seas, oceans, continents, countries and lines of latitude and longitude.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Localities of points on the earth's surface are explained by means of latitude and longitude. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Distances are calculated using the scale of a map.

    Approximate heights of points on the earth's surface are determined using maps.

    The major continents of geographical locations are identified on a world map. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Major continents include North America, South America, Africa, Australasia, Asia, Antarctica and Europe.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The major oceans, seas and waterways are located on a world map. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Major oceans, seas and waterways may include but are not limited to Atlantic ocean, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, Southern Ocean and Artic Ocean.
  • Major seas may include but are not limited to North Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Bay of Biscay, Arabian Sea, Red Sea, Arabian Gulf, Bay of Bengal, Sea of Japan, East China Sea, South China Sea, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea.
  • Major waterways may include but are not limited to Mississippi River, Panama Canal, St Lawrence Seaway, English Channel, Mainz River, Bering Straits, Strait of Gibraltar, Suez Canal, Mozambique Channel, Strait of Malacca and Bass Strait.

    Major ports may include but are not limited to the South African international ports and one international port in each of Nigeria, Tanzania, Angola, Namibia, Mozambique, Canada, USA East Coast, USA West Coast, USA Gulf, South America, each country in the European Union, Middle East, India, Malaysia, Singapore, China, Australia and New Zealand.

    Geographical locations of major airports are identified on a world map.

    Major airports may include but are not limited to the South African international airports and one international airport in each of Nigeria, Tanzania, Angola, Namibia, Mozambique, Canada, USA, South America, each country in the European Union, Middle East, India, Malaysia, Singapore, China, Australia and New Zealand.

    Explain the importance of geographical aspects on international trade.

    The importance of socio-political structures is explained in the context of effective communication between trading partners. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The need for the understanding of and sensitivity to different religious, cultural and value systems is explained in the context of handling diversity in international trade. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The effects of climatic conditions on cargo flows and constraints on international transport are explained in the context of international trade. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of identifying the different currencies used in international transactions is explained in the context of freight forwarding operations.

    South Africa's major trade routes are identified on a map.

    The ways in which trade routes change are explained with examples of varying trade alliances and commodity fluctuations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    South Africa's major trading partners are identified in terms of the trade agreements and groupings which have been established. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Trade agreements and groupings may include but is not limited to Marrakech Agreement, Southern African Development Community (SADC), South African Customs Union (SACU), African Growth (AO), South Africa/European Union Free Trade agreement, Generalised System of Preferences (GSP), New China Textile Agreement.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A list is made of the top 15 major export and import commodities from and to South Africa by sea for the purpose of illustrating South Africa's trading activities.
