PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is aimed at individuals involved in leading of physical activities in the context of outdoor education or development training who are required to provide and maintain a safe and supportive environment for adventure activities, adhering to environmentally-friendly codes of practice for the way outdoor sites are used for activities and ensuring these codes are conformed to while educating participants in the basics of environmental conservation.

Persons credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Create awareness of the impact of activities on the environment.
  • Conduct activities in line with environmental impact assessments.
  • Demonstrate appropriate ethics and precautions associated with activities in the natural environment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Contribute to the formulation and/or reappraisal of a code of best practice relating to use of the environment in outdoor activities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All support staff are made aware of the code of practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Contributions to a code of practice are made from time to time, which reflect current good practice and guidance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Activities are monitored to ensure that they conform to the code of practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The impact on the environment is monitored and evaluated at activity sites.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Participants are helped to understand the current codes of practice and agreements for the sites they are using and the impact that activities can have on sites and the environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Methods are demonstrated as to how impact can be kept to a minimum. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Activities are conducted in a way that demonstrates good environmental practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Participants' attention is drawn to vulnerable areas and how they should be treated. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate appropriate ethics and precautions associated with activities in the natural environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Clients are discouraged from resorting to littering or discarding ignited items such as cigarettes while visiting a nature site. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The feeding of baboons and other wild creatures is strictly avoided at all times. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Fires are extinguished when vacating a nature camping site. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Noise pollution is kept to a minimum. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Soil erosion, the destruction of plants, interference with wild creatures, disruption of breeding, impingement on animals comfort zones and similar infringements are all strictly minimised. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Strict adherence is shown to all laws, rules and regulations pertaining to conservation areas and principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Remedial action is taken where required, throughout the event.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
  • External moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
