PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner achieving this unit standard will be able to split a tractor. This competence will enable the learner to:
  • Prepare to split a tractor.
  • Prepare the tractor.
  • Split a tractor.
  • Keep the workplace safe and productive.

    This will ensure that a tractor is split in accordance with safe and accepted work practices. This competence will enhance the learner's employability and career options in all occupations where the occupant must know how to split a tractor. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    This unit standard has been designed as an introduction to splitting a tractor and does not assume prior learning or experience. The unit standard outcomes and credits are based on the assumption that learners attempting this Unit Standard have demonstrated competence against numeracy and literacy at NQF Level 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The range includes but is not limited to:
  • Splitting a tractor between the engine and the gearbox.
  • Splitting a tractor between the gearbox and the differential.

    Prepare to split a tractor. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The execution of the task is planned in accordance with job instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The tools and workshop equipment are selected and the work area is prepared in accordance with job instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Safety equipment is set up and personal protection equipment is selected in accordance with standard workplace instructions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Safety equipment and personal protective equipment includes, but is not limited to overalls, boots and gloves, safety screens, trestles, splitting tools, rigging and lifting equipment.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare the tractor for splitting.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Safety precautions are taken to minimise the risk of personal injury according to workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Lubricants and fluids are drained according to manufacturer specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The range includes, but is not limited to:
  • Following the correct methodology.
  • Following the correct sequence of activities.
  • Using the correct tools and equipment.
  • Prevent spillage of lubricants.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Secondary components and systems are disconnected according to manufacturer specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The range includes, but is not limited to:
  • Following the correct methodology.
  • Following the correct sequence of activities.
  • Using the correct tools and equipment.
  • Disconnecting pipes and electrical connections.
  • Blocking off pipes and openings.
  • Marking off settings and positions.
  • Safe storage of spares, fasteners and attachment agents.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The activities are conducted in a structured and organised manner according to manufacturer specifications.

    Components and surfaces are cleaned in accordance with job instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Guide rails, supporting devices and lifting gear is placed in position according safe workplace practice.

    Fasteners and attachment agents are identified and loosened according to manufacturer specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The range includes, but is not limited to:
  • Following the correct methodology.
  • Following the correct sequence of activities.
  • Using the correct tools and equipment.
  • Safe storage of spares, fasteners and attachment agents.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The tractor is split according to manufacturer specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The range includes, but is not limited to:
  • Following the correct methodology.
  • Following the correct sequence of activities.
  • Using the correct tools and equipment.
  • Removing components from each other in accordance with manufacturer specification.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The activities are conducted in a structured and organised manner as specified by the manufacturer. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Components and surfaces are cleaned and openings are blocked according to manufacturer specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Occupational safety health and environmental protection measures are adhered to as provided for by workplace policies and procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The range includes, but is not limited to:
  • Measures to protect the person and other employees from personal injury and health risks (eyes, ears, lungs, feet, body, head).
  • Prevention of contamination of the environment.
  • Functionality and safety of tools and equipment.
  • Use of and compliance to warning signs and symbols.
  • Compliance with demarcated areas.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Workshop administration and documentation are completed in accordance with standard workplace instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Housekeeping duties are performed in accordance with standard workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The range of housekeeping procedures includes, but is not limited to:
  • Keeping the work area neat and organised.
  • Disposing of and/or recycling worn spares.
  • Discarding waste and empty containers.
  • Cleaning spillages.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    End of task duties are performed in accordance with standard workplace instructions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The end of task duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Cleaning of tools and workshop equipment.
  • Reporting unsafe or dysfunctional tools and equipment.
  • Storage of tools and equipment.
  • Storage of unused spares and consumables.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Reporting and decision making are performed in accordance with workplace instructions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Reporting and decision making includes, but is not limited to:
  • Following the correct channels.
  • Acting within levels of authority.
  • Adhering to delegated decision making powers.
     


  • UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Assessors assessing learners against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • An institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.

    The assessment of qualifying learners against this standard should meet the requirements of established principles. Practical assessment activities will be used, which are appropriate to the contents/industry/environment in which qualifying learners are working. These activities will include an appropriate combination of self and peer assessment, practical and oral assessments, observations etc.

    The assessment should ensure that all the specific outcomes, critical cross-field outcomes and essential embedded knowledge are assessed. The specific outcomes must be assessed in their own right, through oral and practical evidence. Assessment by observation only cannot be done.

    The specific outcomes and essential knowledge must be assessed in relation to each other. If a qualifying learner is able to explain the essential embedded knowledge, but is unable to provide evidence of competence in the specific outcomes, then they should be judged as not yet competent. Similarly, if a learner is able to perform specific outcomes, but is unable to explain or justify their performance in terms of the essential embedded knowledge, they should not be judged as competent.

    Evidence of the specified critical cross-field outcomes should be found, both in performance and in the essential embedded knowledge.

    Performance of specific outcomes must actively affirm target groups of qualifying learners, not unfairly discriminate against them. Qualifying learners should be able to justify their performance in terms of these values.

    Embedded knowledge is reflected in the assessment criteria for each specific outcome. Embedded knowledge must be deducted from the assessment criteria and must be assessed in its own right, through oral and written evidence. Observation cannot be the only assessment.

    Embedded knowledge includes but is not limited to an understanding of and explanations on:
  • Sequence of activities.
  • Components and systems that must be disconnected.
  • Fluids and oils that must be drained.
  • Correct procedures.
  • Manufacturer specifications.
