PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A person credited with this unit standard is able to demonstrate an understanding of the main issues of responsible tourism. This will particularly apply to persons in the hospitality and tourism support areas, but could be applied to any context.

In particular, on successful completion of this unit standard, the learner will be able to:
  • Understand and apply social and cultural guidelines in the context of responsible tourism.
  • Understand and apply economic guidelines in the context of responsible tourism.
  • Understand and apply environmental guidelines in the context of responsible tourism.
  • Assist in the promotion of positive attitudes toward responsible tourism.
  • Identify and apply the business motives for promoting responsible tourism. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A learner undertaking this unit standard must already have:
  • Demonstrated competence against relevant unit standards at NQF Level 3, either through a previous qualification or through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), which assesses workplace-based experiential learning.
  • Competence in communication skills at NQF Level 4 or equivalent.

    Benefits related to maximising local economic benefit due to increasing linkages and reducing leakages related to tourism in an area can be accurately and comprehensively listed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The purpose of ensuring communities are involved in, and benefit from, tourism is fully outlined. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The relationship between assisting with local marketing and product development and community economic benefits, based on tourism, can be shown in a tangible way. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The benefits of promoting equitable business practices and the paying of fair prices for tourism businesses and local community areas can be persuasively argued. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The following issues relevant to tourism can be discussed with confidence:

    The purpose of using natural resources sustainably can be elaborated on. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The benefits of maintaining biodiversity can be accurately and comprehensively listed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The reasons for limiting the introduction of alien species to only essential and critical requirements, and then in controlled manner, can be persuasively argued.

    The following issues relevant to tourism can be discussed with confidence:

    Assist in the promotion of positive attitudes toward responsible tourism.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Methods of promoting responsible tourism in terms of nature conservation can be confidently discussed, covering: setting of targets; land management; fauna and flora conservation; natural resources use; education. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Energy, water and waste management, including water conservation, are all promoted to visitors. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tourists are encouraged to contribute to responsible tourism through the provision of sufficient, clear information about local socio-economic status and needs, and environmental conditions and issues. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Responsible tourism is promoted by showcasing local community projects and finding ways to make financial support by tourists easy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Visitors are informed how to interact with the local community and respect local culture and customs, and they are encouraged to buy local products and/or services and to pay fair prices. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Guests are provided with a list of local natural resources in an area which are being over utilised and they are encouraged to buy crafts that are sustainably produced.

    Identify and apply the business motives for promoting responsible tourism.
