PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is for persons who may be tasked to identify and rectify faults in an installation. This unit standard will provide learners with knowledge and skills to diagnose causes of faults in installations and take remedial action. Learners will be able to determine causes of faults by conducting checks and tests.

Learners accredited with this unit standard will be capable of:
  • Determining the nature of the condition.
  • Analysing the causes of the condition.
  • Conducting checks and tests.
  • Rectify a faulty installation.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
  • Communication at NQF Level 3.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.
  • The following unit standards or similar unit standards in which knowledge of a specific installation is described:
    > 244321 - Use elementary electronics as applied to electronic systems, NQF Level 3.
    > 244328 - Apply cabling methods, NQF Level 3.
    > 244333- Install electronic equipment, Level 4.
    > 244323 - Determine installation requirements, NQF Level 4.
    > 244326 - Explain the use of installed systems, Level 4.
  • One of the following unit standards or a unit standard in which knowledge of a specific installation is described:
    > 244332 - Demonstrate an understanding of electric fencing, NQF Level 4.
    > 244325 - Demonstrate an understanding of electronic access control, NQF Level 4.
    > 244322 - Demonstrate an understanding of gate automation, NQF Level 4.
    > 244316 - Demonstrate an understanding of intruder alarm systems, NQF Level 4.
    > 244320 - Demonstrate an understanding of CCTV, NQF Level 4.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Condition may refer to but is not limited to faulty components, faulty equipment and the incorrect use of equipment. Fault refers to faulty components, equipment or installation.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Determine the nature of the condition.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Performance and functions of the system are assessed under standard operating conditions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Information is collated in order to determine the condition.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Information may include but is not limited to event logs, fault history and communication with user.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Collated information is assessed to determine the relevancy of data needed for fault finding purposes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Possible variables are identified to determine future actions.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
    Determine causes of the condition.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Data is analysed to determine the probable causes of the condition.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Probable causes are prioritized to ensure a methodical approach to resolve the condition.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The process of elimination is applied in a logical and systematic manner to ensure diagnosis.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
An approach to rectify a fault is determined in line with a given situation.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
A given situation may include but is not limited to a case study, real life situation and simulated scenario.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
The approach used is justified in line with safety prescripts and the given condition.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Safety prescripts may include but are not limited to operational requirements, occupational health and safety.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
    Conduct checks and tests.
    OUTCOME RANGE
Checks may include but are not limited to physical observations while tests refer to practical processes using test equipment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The extent of the condition is determined by conducting a system inspection.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Tools and equipment are selected in accordance with the task requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The use of tools and equipment are demonstrated in a given situation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Testing is performed to ensure system is functioning normally.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Normal functioning includes that the fault has been rectified and that no other faults exist.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
    Rectify a faulty installation.
    OUTCOME RANGE
Faulty installation may include but is not limited to installation faults, component faults and equipment faults.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Probable solutions are assessed to inform potential corrective actions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
A fault in the installation is rectified in a given situation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Reasons for documenting corrective actions are explained for future diagnosis.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
