PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is intended for persons who determine requirements for an installation. It forms the basis for designing more complex installations. Learners will be able to assess sites, equipment and resources needed to perform an installation according to operational requirements. Based on these assessments learners will be able to make decisions regarding the actual installation. This unit standard is for persons who specify, design, sell, plan or install systems.

Learners accredited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Determine site requirements for an installation.
  • Determine equipment required for installation.
  • Determine resources for installation.
  • Confirm power requirements of a system.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
  • Communication at NQF Level 3.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.
  • One of the following unit standards or a unit standard in which knowledge of a specific installation is described:
    > 244332 - Demonstrate an understanding of electric fencing, NQF Level 4.
    > 244325 - Demonstrate an understanding of electronic access control, NQF Level 4.
    > 244322 - Demonstrate an understanding of gate automation, NQF Level 4.
    > 244316 - Demonstrate an understanding of intruder alarm systems, NQF Level 4.
    > 244320 - Demonstrate an understanding of CCTV, NQF Level 4.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Operational requirements may include but are not limited to, agreed customer requirements, legal compliance, manufacturer's requirements, health and safety, industry standards and operational standards.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Determine site requirements for an installation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Operational requirements are interpreted in order to determine the type of system required.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
A physical assessment of the site is conducted to determine the influencing features of the environment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
A floor plan of the site is drawn to represent the layout and influencing features.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Site may include but is not limited to premises, developed or undeveloped land, buildings, machinery such as Automated Teller Machines (ATM) and processing plants.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
A floor plan of site is assessed to determine the required equipment.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION NOTES
Assessment must include assessment of the environment, structural features, proximity and accessibility.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Required equipment may include but is not limited to types and quantity of equipment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
A work plan is developed to install the system to meet operational requirements.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
    Determine equipment required for installation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Equipment needed for the installation is matched with operational requirements.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Matching must take into account types and quantities of equipment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The equipment is matched with functional requirements.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Functional requirements may include but are not limited to functions, features and limitations of equipment, compatibility and environmental conditions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The reasons why operational requirements must be confirmed with the customer are explained in terms of service delivery principles.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Operation requirements may include but are not limited to functions, operation, choice, cost and placement of equipment.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
    Determine resources for installation.
    OUTCOME RANGE
Resources may include but are not limited to resources required for the physical installation of the system such as electricity, tools, and labour resources.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Work schedule is developed for the physical installation process.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Duration of the installation is determined to meet operational requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Specialized equipment and tools required are identified to facilitate installation.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Specialised equipment may include but is not limited to hoists, scaffolding and generators.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
    Confirm system power requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Power requirements are calculated to confirm system operation.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Power requirements must include the power required to allow the system to function optimally during operation (normally specified in voltage and current) and any stand-by power requirements. (These could include battery backup, UPS systems or similar.)

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Cable length and type are verified to minimize voltage drop.
