PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the electronic security industry who sell, plan, install or service intruder alarm systems. The unit standard is for persons who need to understand the concepts and principles of intruder alarm systems, how they operate and what their function are. It is intended for installers, specifiers, sales people, technicians and anyone who will be involved in any aspect of intruder alarm systems. Learners will understand the theory associated with intruder alarm systems and the functions of the components in intruder alarm systems.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the basic theory intruder alarm systems.
  • Explain the theory associated with intruder detectors.
  • Determine intruder alarm systems requirements.

  • Intruder alarm system technology may include but is not limited to digital communicators, radio transmitters, control systems, detection devices, GPRS, GSM, TCP/IP.
  • Intruder alarm system/application may include but is not limited to alarms systems, panic systems, integrated systems.

    Intruder detector types are explained in terms of their advantages and limitations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Detector types may include but is not limited to passive infrared, active infrared, microwave, dual technology, switches, magnetic contacts, glassbreak, 12 volt smoke detectors, pet friendly.
