PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons who install electronic access control systems in various sectors. Learners will not just be able to install these systems but will also be able to verify the use of components in a specific application. Learners will also be able to use CCTV electronic access control systems testing equipment to ensure proper installation.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Perform a practical layout of an access control system.
  • Acquire basic programming data.
  • Install the system.
  • Configure the system.

  • Communication at NQF Level 3.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Electronic access control components may include but are not limited to controllers, readers, power supplies, converters, expanders, and input/output/network modules.
  • Access control reader technology, may include but are not limited to magnetic stripe, proximity, Dallas chips, biometric, smartcard, RF devices. Access control systems/application must include but are not limited to multiple reader systems, networked systems, and stand-alone systems.
  • Installing includes the mounting and configuration of the electronic access control systems.

    The reasons and criteria for emergency devices are explained in terms of current legislation.

    Card types and equipment capacity are described in terms of manufacturer specifications and restrictions and limitations for the relevant equipment.

    Different access time zones are determined to facilitate the programming of the system.

    System customisation is demonstrated to ensure that the system meets operational requirements.

    System customisation must include but is not limited to access levels, users and anti-pass back.
