PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this unit standard will be able to understand thermal energy principles and its application in the process industry.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of energy and the environmental principles related to energy.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of temperature, temperature scales and the application of temperature measurement and control in a process environment.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of thermal energy, the factors affecting it and its application in a process environment.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of heat, sources of heat, the conservation of heat, heat transfer and its application in a process environment.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the phases of matter, latent heat, evaporation and its application in a process environment.

    Energy forms include but are not limited to kinetic energy, potential energy, thermal energy, chemical energy, nuclear energy, electrical energy, gravitational energy and mechanical energy.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Concepts related to thermal energy are defined using scientific terminology. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Concepts include but are not limited to thermal energy, temperature and heat.

    The concepts of renewable and non-renewable energy sources are explained using scientific terminology. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Renewable and non-renewable sources of energy are compared in terms of cost, efficiency and sustainability.

    The importance of energy conservation is motivated in terms of processing applications.

    The concept of temperature is explained using scientific terminology.

    Temperature measurement methods are discussed in terms of scientific principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Different temperature scales, symbols and their origins are explained in terms of scientific principles and terminology. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Temperature scales include Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Reference points on each of the temperature scales are indicated and are used to explain the correlation between the different temperature scales. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Process examples are used to explain the measurement and the control of temperature in a process environment.

    Factors include the temperature, mass and the specific heat of the material.

    The SI units for expressing thermal energy and heat are defined and explained using scientific terminology.

    Process examples are used to explain heating and cooling methods used in a process environment.

    The concept of heat and the "Law of Conservation of Energy" are explained in terms of scientific principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Sources of heat are explained with the assistance of examples from the processing industry. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Sources include but are not limited to combustion, chemical reactions, mechanical, nuclear reaction, heat exchange and electrical.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Heat flow to or from a liquid or a solid object is explained in terms of the three heat transfer methods. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Heat transfer methods include conduction, convection and radiation.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Details of heat transfer methods used in a process environment are explained with the assistance of examples.

    Demonstrate an understanding of the phases of matter.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Different phases of matter and melting, freezing, evaporation and condensation temperatures are discussed using scientific terminology. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Latent heat of fusion and vaporisation are explained in terms of scientific principles and using scientific terminology. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Factors impacting on the evaporation rate of a liquid are discussed in terms of scientific principles. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Factors should include but are not limited to temperature, type of liquid, pressure, surface area of the liquid and concentration of substance in the vapour phase.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Industry examples are used to explain applications of melting, freezing, evaporation and condensation in a process environment to achieve different objectives.
