PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to describe the purpose of and use an echo sounder, speed log, global navigation satellite system and electronic plotters onboard a vessel. They will able to explain the usefulness of the systems as navigational tools.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Explaining navigational aids.
  • Using a Global Navigation Satellite systems.
  • Using Electronic Plotters as an aid to navigation. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this unit standard will be assumed competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 1 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1 or equivalent. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • This unit standard involves the basic skills and knowledge required to use specific electronic navigation aids and equipment.
  • Work must be carried out in accordance with the relevant maritime regulations.
  • The vessels involved are fishing vessels.
  • The aids to navigation can either be operational instruments or simulated utilizing drawn pictures or computer simulation.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA.
