PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for small retail business operators who need to maintain a safe and secure environment in the workplace.

Persons credited with this unit standard will be prepared to respond to an emergency situation and incidents should they arise business. They will also be able to maintain customer safety and will have the ability to address suspicious behaviour within the work environment.

    The importance of maintaining a safe working environment for staff and customers is explained emphasising the effect unsafe conditions could have on the business. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Identify the types of safety equipment legally required by the business. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Appropriate locations for safety equipment in the store are identified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Safety procedures for avoiding accidents in the work environment are described with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The importance of securing areas from unauthorised access is explained in relation to the effect it will have on safety and security.

    An emergency is responded to implementing the accepted organisational procedure.

    Procedures to follow in event of identifying suspicious behaviour within the outlet are explained with examples.

    Legal requirements when addressing a suspicious character are explained focussing on the consequences for the person and the business if they are not complied with.

  • Programmes leading to the award of credits from this unit standard will be accredited by the relevant ETQA. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
