PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is specifically for learners in the Textile Manufacturing formal sector working in, or who wish to work in Fibre manufacturing in a relevant factory. Learners assessed as competent against this standard will be capable of:
  • Preparing Materials and Equipment for Processing.
  • Operating and Maintaining Equipment.
  • Monitoring and Maintaining the Process.
  • Quality Assuring the Output of the Process.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Learners are required to demonstrate fundamental competencies, specified below, at ABET.
  • Level 4 or NQF 1.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This Unit Standard is applicable to manufacturing processes within the Textile sector. Operations may include, but are not limited to:
  • Polymer manufacturing.
  • Extrusion.
  • take-up and fibre finishing in a wet, dry and melt extrusion process.

    Prepare Materials and Equipment for Processing.

    Materials relevant to the product being processed are identified and prepared. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The process and auxiliary equipment is identified, cleaned and prepared in line with product requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Relevant preparation information is processed in line with product requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Service and auxiliary equipment faults are identified and the necessary action implemented promptly.

    Operate and Maintain Equipment.

    Equipment is started following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Equipment conditions are monitored at specified intervals and when indicated, minor components are removed and replaced to ensure maintenance of equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Equipment faults are identified and repaired within own scope of authority. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Faults outside of own scope of authority are report and the necessary follow-up actions taken according to standard operating procedures.

    Alarms are responded to within agreed time and own authority limits. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Operating information is recorded on the relevant documentation or entered into computer.

    Product/Process conditions are monitored and any adjustments undertaken where necessary.

    Process faults are responded to within the agreed time and authority limits.

    Product from machine/position is removed and identified at the end of a cycle. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Generated waste is disposed in accordance with company procedures.

    Standard shift changeover procedures are followed according to standard operating procedures.

    Process information is recorded accurately and legibly onto relevant documentation and/or enter into computer.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Learning programmes that will enable the achievement of this unit standard will be accredited by the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessors who assess the competency of learners against this standard must be qualified and registered with the appropriate ETQA.
  • Moderators qualified and registered with the appropriate ETQA must conduct moderation. All external moderation will be conducted at the discretion of the relative ETQA.
