PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose is to enable the learner to begin to apply basic transcription techniques.

Learners accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Identifying and interpreting chords.
  • Identifying and applying intervals and common diatonic chord progressions.
  • Identifying cadences.
  • Demonstrating melodic and rhythmic dictation.
  • Formulating basic lead sheet transcription.

    This unit standard will contribute to the development of a learner within the music field by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of music. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for creating a solid foundation in the field of music.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify and interpret chords. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Major, minor, triads, augmented, diminished and suspended forth chords are identified according to industry practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Major, minor and diminished triads (in root position only) are sung using any recognized notation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Correct spelling of chord symbols are noted using any recognised notation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Note values specified by the provider are used to write the chord tones of melodic and/or harmonic chords. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify and apply intervals and common diatonic chord progressions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Associated melodic ideas/common songs for intervals of a 1- 8 are sung using any standard notation according to industry practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Intervals listed in 2.1 are aurally recognised and noted according to industry practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Common chord progressions are identified and notated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Note values are used to write the chord tones of melodic and harmonic scales as stipulated by the provider according to industry practice.

    Cadences are identified and noted according to industry standard. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Including but not limited to: perfect, imperfect, plagal and interrupted.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Roman numeral analyses and application is defined and applied to chords as per provider specifications and industry practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Roman numeral interpretations of these chord progressions are formulated according to industry practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Chord progressions identified above are recognised when played in any inversion according to industry practice. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Demonstrate melodic and rhythmic dictation.

    Two bar melodies are sight read. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Include but not limited to: note values of a semibreve, minim, crochet and Quavers, keys C and G major using sol-fa for example.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A metronome is used at industry related tempo for melodic studies. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Two bar rhythms are sight read. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Include but not limited to: note values of a semibreve, minim, crochet and Quavers.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A metronome is used at industry related tempo for rhythmic studies.

    A basic song/piece is transcribed or formulated according to industry standard and/or organisational specification.

    Theoretical understanding of notation concepts is demonstrated.

    Chord progressions are displayed according to industry practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Pitch and rhythm are recognised and used according to industry practice. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any individual wishing to be assessed, (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must hold a minimum of level 3 qualification in the music field.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this US or assessing this US, must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
