PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to use gangway signals by selecting the correct position and signal equipment according to operational requirements. They are also able to conduct continuous assessment of the lifting gear and evaluate the slinging methods to ensure safe operating practices.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Recognising, interpreting and demonstrating approved gangway signals as per South African Ports Cargo Handling Code of Practice.
  • Selecting position and using correct signaling equipment and applying signals according to operational requirements.
  • Conducting continuous assessment of lifting gear and safe slinging practices. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners accessing this unit standard are competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard is for people responsible for directing the operation of the cargo lifting appliances in a ship board freight handling environment.

    Recognise, interpret and demonstrate approved gangway signals as per SA Ports Cargo Handling Code of Practice.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Hand/Bat signals are identified and explained in accordance with relevant legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Legislated Hand/Bat signals are selected and demonstrated as per industry best practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Gangway signals are interpreted according to South African Ports Cargo Handling Code of Practice. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Select position and use correct signaling equipment and apply signals according to operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Personal Protective Equipment, signaling bat and other required communication equipment are worn as per organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Identification as gangway signalman is given to lifting appliance operator in accordance with standard operation procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Safe operating practices are identified and explained as per industry best practice and the South African Ports Cargo Handling Code of Practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Safe and visible position is selected and taken up as per operational requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Wind, rain and poor visibility and cargo - bulk, containers and break-bulk.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Hand signals are used to place, adjust and/or remove cargo as per stowage requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Single signalman, two signalman and back to crane/winch driver.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Conduct continuous assessment of lifting gear and safe slinging practices as per industry best practice.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Lifting gear is assessed visually using the required check-list to ensure it is safe and appropriate prior to signaling. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Safe slinging practices are applied to each load prior to signaling, as per industry best practice. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Safe slinging with respect to cargo type, configuration, centre of gravity and structural strength.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Potentially unsafe/dangerous situations are identified and appropriate signals given to ensure safety and protection of personnel, cargo and ship structure, as per organisational standards and procedures.
