PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to measure, install and service aluminium systems in a safe and efficient manner, which will contribute towards the overall efficiency of the organisation. This competence will enable the learner to measure a range of lengths pertaining to the installation of aluminium systems on a construction site. This competence will enable the learner to install and service aluminium systems on a construction site. This will ensure that breakages and stoppages are kept to a minimum and equipment is used in accordance with safe work practices. This competence will advance the learner's own expertise and employability in both the construction sector and other related jobs. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed that learners are already competent in the following:
  • Communication at NQF Level 1.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1.

    Scaffolding is erected and used in as per specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Ladders are used with due regard to safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Safety belts are used to prevent injury to personnel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Warning signs/banners are interpreted correctly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Installed glass is marked for safety purposes. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Measure openings on construction sites.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The vertical dimension of an opening is measured and recorded accurately. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The horizontal dimension of an opening is measured and recorded accurately. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The diagonal dimensions of an opening are measured and recorded accurately. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Perform installation of aluminium systems.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An aluminium system is installed in a dry installation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The range of aluminium systems includes shop fronts, sliding doors, casements, sliding stacking doors and sliding folding doors.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An aluminium system is installed in a wet installation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The range of aluminium systems includes shop fronts, sliding doors, casements, sliding stacking doors and sliding folding doors.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The methods of servicing for the different hardware are demonstrated. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The range of hardware includes hinges, handles, locks, rollers and wheels.
     


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the Unit Standard, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described both in individual Unit Standards as well as the integrated competence described in the Unit Standard.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
