PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are responsible for preparing areas for drilling and marking off drill holes in quarries. People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic drilling and blasting patterns.
  • Prepare to mark off for drilling.
  • Mark off the area to be drilled.

    Explain the drilling and blasting requirements.

    The purpose of drilling and blasting is explained in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The drilling equipment in use in the operation is identified and the basic principle of operation explained in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The drilling patterns in use are described and the implication of keeping to the particular pattern explained in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The hazards relating to drilling and blasting are explained and the preventive measures in place are explained in accordance with specified requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare to mark off the workplace for drilling. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The work area is identified and demarcated in accordance with the drill pattern specified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The work area is examined and hazards and defects are rectified or reported in accordance with specified requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Examination must include the following:
  • Misfires and loose explosives.
  • Overhang.
  • Large rocks.
  • Bench edges.
  • Moving machinery.
  • Water accumulations.
  • Underfoot conditions.
  • Toes.

    Marking off equipment is assembled and checked in accordance with requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Personal protective equipment is selected, checked and worn in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Consequences of inadequate preparation are described in terms of potential effects on safety, health, production and damage to equipment.

  • Demarcation of area.

    Anomalies are assessed and rectified or reported in accordance with requirements.

    Anomalies must include the following:
  • Variations in bench level.
  • Back break.
  • Weak ground.
  • Intrusions.
  • Voids.
  • Undercuts in face.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Reporting and recording are conducted in accordance with specified requirements.

  • Reporting to supervisor.

    Drill holes are marked off in accordance with Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental requirements.
