PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications. The learner is capable of measuring and assessing earthmoving equipment component parts to restore the machine to operational condition. This will contribute to the exit level outcomes required for the National Certificate in maintaining vehicles and related qualifications. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
This unit standard has been designed as part of a progression. It is one of a series of unit standards for maintaining vehicles in the field of manufacturing and engineering. It is assumed that the learner has already learned the use of engineering hand tools, workshop equipment, power tools, and measuring equipment and to maintain a safe and productive working environment.

All work is performed under supervision at regular intervals and according to workplace and workshop manual specifications and occupational safety, health and environmental legislation.

Plan and prepare work area and component for measuring and assessment. 
OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Planning includes reading and interpreting the job card/work instructions and obtaining service data.
  • Preparing includes selecting appropriate tools and equipment and clean component parts.
  • Appropriate tools and equipment means industry approved tools and equipment as being most suited to complete the task to a professional and competent manner with due regard to safe working practices.
  • Components include: hydraulic, engine and drive train.
  • Hydraulic component parts include spool valves, springs, wear plates, barrels, port plates, cylinder rod, valve bore, gears, vanes and rotors.
  • Engine component parts include crankshaft, camshafts, valves, valve springs, valve rotators, cylinder bore, pistons, shafts and gears.
  • Drive train component parts include gears, shafts, bearings, valves, plates, discs and universal couplings.
