PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications. The learner is capable of removing earthmoving equipment components for dismantling or inspection. This will contribute to the exit level outcomes required for the National Certificate in servicing vehicles and related qualifications. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
This unit standard has been designed as part of a progression. It is one of a series of unit standards for servicing earthmoving equipment in the field of manufacturing and engineering. It is assumed that the learner has already learned the use of engineering hand tools, power tools, measuring equipment and to maintain a safe and productive working environment.

All work is performed under the supervision and according to workplace and workshop manual specifications and occupational safety, health and environmental legislation.

Plan and prepare work area and machine for component removal. 
OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Planning includes reading and interpreting the job card/work instructions and obtaining service data.
  • Preparing includes selecting appropriate tools and equipment, positioning machine in work area, cleaning component and surrounding area prior to removal, relief system pressure, support implements, isolate electrical system and disconnect battery.
  • Appropriate tools and equipment means industry approved tools and equipment as being most suited to complete the task to a professional and competent manner with due regard to safe working practices.
  • Machine means earthmoving equipment.

  • Drive train components - propshafts, undercarriage and brake components but exclude transmissions, differentials, axles and torque converters.
