PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications. The learner is capable of removing vehicle engines for dismantling, inspection or repairs. This will contribute to the exit level outcomes required for the National Certificate in maintaining vehicles and related qualifications. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
This unit standard has been designed as part of a progression. It is one of a series of unit standards for maintaining vehicles in the field of manufacturing and engineering. It is assumed that the learner has already learned the use of engineering hand tools, power tools, workshop equipment and measuring equipment, select and use automobile lifting equipment and to maintain a safe and productive working environment.

All work is performed under supervision at regular intervals and according to workplace and workshop manual specifications and occupational safety, health and environmental legislation.

Plan and prepare work area and vehicle for engine removal. 
OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Planning includes reading and interpreting the job card/work instructions and obtaining service data.
  • Preparing includes selecting appropriate tools and equipment, cleaning engine and engine mounting area prior to removal, park vehicle on level and safe ground and draining of fluids.
  • Fluids include brake fluids, oil and coolant mixtures.
  • Appropriate tools and equipment means industry approved tools and equipment as being most suited to complete the task to a professional and competent manner with due regard to safe working practices.
