PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This standard is aimed at people who work or intend to work within a large process operation in the chemical industry, and seek recognition for skills essential for operating equipment within a specific chemical environment.

Those learners who acquire the outcomes of this standard will know about and be able to establish equipment start up conditions to a specific state, pertaining to the chemical industry.

For the purpose of this standard the following is understood as equipment:
  • A machine or apparatus which delivers a result or achieves a function in a chemical process.
  • A machine that is operated independently or in combination with other units in a chemical process.
  • Equipment is generally operated in the field but remote control may be used.

    The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the start up conditions for equipment
  • Accomplish start up conditions for equipment by completing a range of checks and tests
  • Demonstrate an understanding of actions to correct abnormal start up conditions
  • Communicate and record status of equipment prior to start-up.

  • Process-variables include pressure measurement, volumetric level measurement, flow measurement and temperature measurement

    3. The function of each item of equipment in the operation of the system is explained with reference to applicable science and technology. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Specified response to alarm conditions for the equipment are identified and explained in the correct sequence. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. The operating procedures for the equipment are described.

    6. Process-variables to be measured are identified, listed and described.

    7. Acceptable tolerances for each process-variables are explained.

  • This unit standard is limited to a minimum of 6 pieces of equipment listed: dryers, strippers, cooling towers, mixers, fans, conveying equipment, positive displacement pumps, centrifugal pumps, positive displacement compressors, filters, vessels, heat exchangers.

    1. The appropriate personnel are informed that start up is about to begin.

    2. Appropriate documentation is obtained and processed for start up.

    3. Correct equipment for checks and tests is located on site. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Results of checks, tests and abnormalities are recorded and communicated according to requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Each check and test is completed within the defined timeframe. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    6. Necessary checks and tests are carried out following standard operating procedures.

    7. Availability of standby equipment is established and located on site.

    Abnormalities may include electrical, line obstruction, permit conditions not met, leaks, mechanical, incompleteness and incorrect line up.
