PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard has been developed for the surveying occupational area and is intended for persons who aim to achieve career advancement by gaining surveying skills leading to a qualification based on unit standards. A person who has successfully completed this unit standard is able to design and produce cartographic products using fundamental cartographic principles.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of the theoretical concepts of Cartographic Design
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of the theoretical concepts of Cartography
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of the theoretical concepts associated with Cartographic Production
  • Design and produce cartographic products using fundamental cartographic principles

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Cartographic products are designed and produced using fundamental cartographic principles in either scenario (a) or (b)

    (a) A map is designed and produced using a digital system according to a given theme.
    (b) Digital Cartographic components are designed and produced according to component requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    a) Planning the cartographic process. Design Symbols. Select appropriate scale and map projection. Use Annotated Photography, Scanned Photography and Ancillary data. Operate the mapping modules of a digital system.
    b) Produce a contour sheet. Compile a Digital Elevation Model. Design Cartographic Symbols according to a given theme.
     


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    1. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or will assess this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA and registered with FE / HE registrar.
    3. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.

    Therefore anyone wishing to be assessed against this unit standard may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
