PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the electrical engineering field who will be required to maintain and repair fuel gas domestic appliances.

A person credited with this unit standard will be capable of:
  • Locating and determining the cause of faults.
  • Repairing of fuel gas appliances.
  • Maintaining fuel gas appliances.
  • Pressure testing and commissioning of fuel gas appliances.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical engineering field by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of appliance repair. The skills knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and contribute to the upliftment and economic growth within the appliance repair environment.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are already competent in the following:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.
  • Understanding the principles of fuel gas appliances and related safety regulations.
  • Use and knowledge of electrical testing instruments.
  • Introduction to domestic appliance industry.
  • Knowledge of electrical appliance operation.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Domestic gas appliances are limited to domestic gas ovens, hobs, fridges, burners, water heaters, space heaters, camping equipment and driers.
  • Conduct fault finding on fuel gas appliances.
  • "Domestic" refers to appliances that operate on pressures up to 5kPa.
  • Types of gas: LPG, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), natural gas.
  • The repair is limited to the appliance side of the appliance isolating and excludes work on the source side of the valve.
  • Repairs are limited to gas components only.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Locate faults in domestic gas appliances and determine their causes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Fault location and deduction of cause is done logically, systematically, and supported by direct observation and measurements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Fault location and deduction of cause is done without trial and error replacement of parts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Fault location and deduction of cause is determined in accordance with manufacturer's servicing data. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Fault location and the determination of causes is carried out in compliance with current regulations, standards and manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Fault location and the determination of causes is accomplished within industry acceptable timeframes. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare for repair and maintenance.

    Tools, spares and equipment required for the task are selected and checked for correct functioning and availability. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The site is ensured to be hazard free and prepared for the task at hand.

    The appliance is isolated according to industry safety standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Ventilation is ensured to be within criteria of SANS 1539 regulations and OHS Act.

    Faults are rectified in such a way that the appliance functions according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The repair is conducted using appropriate functioning diagrams, in a sequence and manner that maximises efficiency and ensures safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Replacement parts are selected and used in compliance with manufacturer's specifications and applicable codes and standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Applicable tools are selected and used in accordance with their design and manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Work practices are carried out without injury to workers, public, or damage to building, other services, tools or equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The consequences of sub-standard repair are described in terms of the effect on productivity and the potential danger to people, appliance and equipment. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Maintain gas appliances.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Appliances are maintained to design detail specifications in accordance with manufacturers' specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Appliances are protected mechanically and cleaned in accordance with manufacturers' specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Functional and safety checks are carried out as per manufacturers' maintenance schedules, including the replacement of jets and thermal cut outs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Settings of burners and controls are ensured to comply to manufacturers' specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Work practices are carried out without injury to workers, public, or damage to building, other services, tools or equipment. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Apply pressure-test on system for re-commission. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The test sequence applied follows from the isolating valve to the end point where required. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tests establish the correct operation of the appliance as per applicable codes, standards and OHS Act requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tools and equipment are used as per design and manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Documentation, including necessary compliance certificates, is completed as per standard procedures.
